at least in some of the cases where this has been seen the cause is the
following:
The i915 DRM driver used to do polling for completion, busy waiting. It
moved to be interrupt driven, which is usually better for power, but it
will show up as more wakeups in powertop....

IOW, this is not a regression?

I don't know about this specifc case (not enough information) but for
the case I described it's not a regression. Going to interrupt driven
from busy waiting is an improvement not a regression :)

Sure it is. :-)

Well, several thousand or more interrupts really seems like a
regression :). But it seems that's the same thing as the “IRQ
spinning” (there was a thread on dri-devel about that).

It seems fixed with a patch from Matthew Garrett applied to
drm-intel/for-airlied but I don't think this has been applied to Linus
master.

Kamezawa has a fix that Li has tested. We need to polish the changelog
and resend the patch.

The patch I had success with was the one enabling MSI on 965. You can
find it there:

http://marc.info/?l=dri-devel&m=122843874524733&w=2

Not sure if it's “the one” really usable, but at least it fixes the
problem for now.

Looks like the patch was from Keith, not me?

Unrelatedly, I didn't get the Cc:ed copy of this mail. Did you get a

Woops, sorry. You made so much patches for me and my backlight that I
got confused.

Yeah (and I'll get one on this too). I never managed to send you a mail,
my mailserver IP is listed on the mail-abuse RBL, I guess because it's
an ADSL line. I need to configure another way out for mails to you :)

I can confirm, that this regression is worked around by commit
f3179748a157c21d44d929fd3779421ebfbeaa93 "radeonfb: Disable new color
