Hi Michael,

Is that the same problem i'v with my card !
And with my preview patch you can download a diff for kernel 2.4.19.

Jeff is not really okay with me about this driver.

Please test it and report feedback on the ml
http://descript.sysdoor.net/patch/kernel/2.4.19/8139too.c.diff

Thank,
Michael

Subject: 2.4.xx: 8139 isn't working

Hi,

my new board (GA-8ST, P4, single-CPU, SiS Chipset) has a RealTek 8139
on board which isn't working with Linux 2.4.xx (tried 2.4.18, 2.4.19,
2.4.20rc1 and 2.4.20rc2).

I've attached lspci, dmesg and config from my 2.4.20rc2 and from a
2.2.20, where the NIC is working like a charm....

2.2.20:
eth0: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xe000, IRQ 11,
00:20:ed:3a:f5:ee.

2.4.20-rc2:
8139too Fast Ethernet driver 0.9.26
eth0: RealTek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet at 0xd082f000, 00:20:ed:3a:f5:ee,
IRQ 19
eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8139C'
eth0: Setting 100mbps full-duplex based on auto-negotiated partner
ability 45e1.
NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out
eth0: Tx queue start entry 4 dirty entry 0.
eth0: Tx descriptor 0 is 00002000. (queue head)
eth0: Tx descriptor 1 is 00002000.
eth0: Tx descriptor 2 is 00002000.
eth0: Tx descriptor 3 is 00002000.

I've also tried 8139cp, but the driver says that my nic isn't a 8139C+
and I should try 8139too instead - with no success as you can see....

If I can help any further, let me know (please with an additional
personal addressed E-Mail).

Bye
Michael

You may want to check if you have IO-APIC enabled in your kernel. Try to
boot with "noapic" and see if this helps. I do have a SiS based test
system with an on board RTL8139 around that doesn't behave with IO-APIC
enabled...

I have the same ethernet card as you, but do not have any trouble.
Reading your config etc., I guess that your motherboard do not have a
good support for local IOAPIC.

You should definitely compile without SMP and without local IOAPIC.

Michael,

As was mentioned by another poster, UP IOAPIC is very likely the problem
suspect here, but ACPI is also a possibility.

Booting with "noapic" or changing your BIOS to "MP 1.1" instead of "MP
1.4" will likely solve the problem.

If that doesn't not solve the problem, try disabling ACPI in your
kernel's config.

Please let us know if either of these solutions works for you!

thanks and regards,

Jeff

That's why you definitely need to feed *REAL* information to Jeff so that he
can find with you what in your patch makes it work for you, and will probably
make it work for Michael and others. Your patch may work because of a side
effect, and may not work on other systems because of other side effects (apic,
irq numbers,...).

None of you have provided even the smallest amount of info. One says "it works
only with this strange patch" and the other one "it doesn't for me even with
your strange patch". Even Windowsians are more precise with their support. How
would you hope that your patch be accepted with such an attitude ?

- does modprobe complain ?
- does modprobe return ?
- do you get an oops ?
- does dmesg show errors or warnings (irq routing conflicts, unsupported chip).
- does the machine lock up hard at load time ?
- does the machine lock up when you set the interface up ?
- does the machine lock up when you start sending ?
- is the link on the board lit ?
- does the machine resolve arp ?
- does the machine show timeouts ?
- what speed are your using it at ? (100 fdx, 100 hdx, 10 hdx...)

And as Jeff said, please read REPORTING-BUGS. A simple lspci could show us that
in fact you have a known-buggy chipset and that your patch is indeed a
workaround for the chipset and not for the NIC.

Thanks in advance,
Willy

Hi, if i may interject at this point in time, and ask something
related, is there any reason why we should enable APIC or IO-APIC on a
uniprocessor system? What's the difference between the 2, or what's the
practical usage of these?

I'm reading the Configure.help and Documentation/i386/IO-APIC.txt for
these 2 items and i'm confused.

Thanks.

The APIC is integrated into the CPU, the IO-APIC is part of the chipset on
your motherbord. It enabled you to use more IRQ's and therefore you need to
share less IRQ's between devices, which gives you a slight performance
benifit.
