The e1000 driver fails to operate an Intel PRO/1000 MT Quad Port Server
Adaptor under the latest 2.4.26+bk with CONFIG_SMP=y. It works fine
when CONFIG_SMP=n.
netstat -i shows packets being transmitted and received with ~1/2 of the
received packets being errors.
This is a Dell 650 configured with 4 (hyperthreaded) CPUs. E1000 driver
version is 5.2.39-k1.

Joe

Did you enable APIC in UP mode, and did you try with an SMP kernel booted
with the 'nosmp' option ? Have you tried with plain 2.4.26 too ? There were
e1000 changes in latest bk.
I'm interested in trying this, because I know of a firewall appliance which
is based on a dell with 2 xeon HT and which has 2 of these cards. I might
try to boot it on a linux CD on monday if I find some time. Could you post
your config ?

Willy

Just FYI, at least the 544 (single port chip) works fine on a dual athlon in
2.4.26+bk.
Cheers,
Willy

Hi Willy,
Uniprocessor 2.4.26 works fine.
Uniprocessor 2.4.26 + local apic works fine.
Uniprocessor 2.4.26 + local apic + io apic fails.
cat /proc/interrupts on the failing case looks interesting:
CPU0
0: 24292 IO-APIC-edge timer
...
50: 7264 IO-APIC-level ioc0
93: 0 none eth1
The .config file for the failure case is:

interesting. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to try on the machine I told
you about last day. But right here, I have a dual athlon communicating with
an alpha, both with e1000 (544) in 2.4.26. Since there's a PCI bridge on your
quad, I wonder if the IOAPIC doesn't trigger an interrupt routing problem with
bridges. Are all the ports unusable or do some of them work reliably in APIC
mode ?
Cheers,
Willy

Joe could you also try it without ACPI if possible.

I just verified that the Quad Ethernet board works with 2.6.5 SMP, so it
is unlikely to be a bridge or other hardware problem.
For 2.4.26, the Dell 650 has an Intel 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller
soldered in, which also uses the e1000 driver, and that works fine, so
we know the 2.4.26 e1000 driver works with some of these Intel chips.
When the Quad board works, it negotiates down to 10 MBits/sec Half Duplex.
Not sure yet if this is what it is supposed to be doing in our environment.
Regards,
Joe
PS: do you CC'ed Intel guys have some insights or data for us?

Sorry that was not what I meant. I meant that the 2.4.26 irq routing or
I don't know what might experience difficulties due to the presence of
a PCI bridge on this board, and potentially this one particularly. I once
encountered such a problem in a desktop machine which would only see 3 out
of the 4 ports on an adaptec quad board, depending on the PCI slot it was
fit in ! It turned out to be a problem with region alignment or something
like this which was not correctly forwarded through the bridge (bios bug
or so at initialization).

OK, same here.

I remember something like this not long ago. It was what ethtool reported, but
the card was running either gigabit or a forced 100FDX without auto-neg on the
other side, I don't remember. Can you try a simple 4-pairs cable between two
ports on the quad to check what media is negociated ?
Also, can you cat /proc/interrupts with and without io/apic, and try without
ACPI as Zwane suggested ?
Cheers,
Willy
FYI, using the dual 85540 board w/e1000 works fine on a quad SMP w/APIC
support.
However, if I try to bond, I get immediate detonation.

That was it. Actually I had CONFIG_ACPI off (unknown reasons, inherited
.config), when I turned it on the board started to work.
Thanks everyone for all the input.
