Perhaps that broke compiling here:

config attached, plain 2.6.7-rc2-mm1, only with dsdt patch for my laptop.

This really, really screams "I want to be a special file", so the interface

Been there, done that. open() on /proc/{$pid,self}/perfctr with
or without O_CREAT was the "get initial access" interface for
several years, until the semantics of /proc/$pid (and /proc/self)
completely changed in 2.6.0-test6.

Virtual perfctrs wants something that denotes the real kernel
task, not that process-is-a-group-of-kernel-threads crap.

I'm not on a nptl system here, so no thread groups in use, but don't
we have /proc/$pid/$tid/ now?

And yes, I agree with you that the change was utter crap, still wondering
how it went in without proper review.

Maybe. I didn't investigate the subdirectory semantics too
closely because at the time I wanted something that could
work in both 2.6 and 2.4. Hence the self-contained ioctl()
on a char-misc device approach in perfctr-2.6.

A file-system open() solution needs:
1. A simple predictable file name that denotes your own task.
2. Given a task id (however it's retrieved, but it's not getpid()),
a file name that denotes that and only that task.

> And yes, I agree with you that the change was utter crap, still wondering

I'm biased :-) but I think the main reason had to do with
systems with many thousands of threads, which may have
made /proc and tools like top and ps behave poorly.

Yes. Apparently gcc-2.95 doesn't like to dereference a "void *" even
just inside of a "__typeof__". Which is a bit silly, since the result is a
perfectly valid _type_. It's obviously been fixed since, so I never saw
this.

(Aside - with anon unions also not working in older gcc's, I suspect we'll
start requiring gcc-3+ in the 2.7.x timeframe. I know it's a lot slower,
but apparently at least it now is starting to generate comparable code
again).

Anyway, the easiest work-around would be to just avoid derefencing the
pointer, but then you have to add strange modifiers (both "const" and
"volatile" at the same time) to make sure that gcc won't complain about
the assignment dropping any modifiers.

So the fix I'm going to check in is to just make "__chk_user_ptr()" be
something that gcc never even sees, which allows us to simplify it for the
sparse case too.

In other words, this should work for even old versions of gcc.. Just to be
anal, you should probably test on gcc-2.95 ;)

Thanks for this report.

Better workaround:
disable
Library routines
Quick Sort

@Andrew:
add-qsort-library-function depends on the XFS qsort patches you removed
(and it's currently not used by anything else).

Almost. It looks like the #ifdefs should be changed to
CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC, since without it, nmi.c never gets built.

Indeed. CONFIG_PERFCTR=n leads to compile-time warnings
from the syscall prototypes in <linux/perfctr.h>.
I'm not sure if providing dummy struct declarations is
cleaner than bracketing the offending code inside #ifdef
CONFIG_PERFCTR, but this patch should fix the warnings for now.

The kernel does not boot on my machine, I tried 2.6.7-rc2 without -mm1 patch,
that one works, but with mm1 patch nothing happens after uncompressing. It
was the same with 2.6.7-rc1-mm1 too. Before 2.6.7-rc1-mm1 there wasn't that
problem.

Andrew,

Can you just drop this for now until I get a chance to suck down -mm
and redo this properly?

The correct fix is to s/#elseif/#elif/, not to

It seems you have to enable the 10/100 section in order to get to
the gigabit section. This is the case in the standard tree too,
nothing in -mm changed this.

you need to turn on support for Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit). i had the
same problem on my laptop.

The time conversion functions may have const args, which is in fact
useful for when they are passed const variables as arguments so as
to avoid discarding qualifiers from pointer types warnings. This is
a preparatory cleanup for a minor aio bugfix.

start_jiffies was not respected by set_timeout(), which reread jiffies
instead of respecting what read_events() passed it. This difference can
be significant, particularly if the calling process slept during the
copy_to_user() operation in read_events(). To correct this, this patch
teaches it to respect its argument, with the additional bonus of
converting it to use timespec_to_jiffies() instead of open-coding it.

The patch bk-netdev.patch in 2.6.7-rc2-mm1 doesn't compile.

It contains the following change, which creates two identical e1000_gstrings_stats[]

There are other errors - many more such duplicated and near-duplicated

No, it's all due to my hamfisted attempt to resolve various bk conflicts.

I ran into the same compile errors in drivers/scsi/sr_ioctl.c.

If I turn off CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR, then it builds ok.

Just guessing, the problem is likely in the bk-scsi.patch, which seems
to be signed off by James Bottomley, and handled by or originated from
Markus Lidel and various others. This is the only patch in Andrew's
2.6.7-rc2-mm1 that touches files matching drivers/scsi/sr*.

So I am adding him to the cc list.

Hmm. It's *morally* wrong since there's really no requirement that
a machine with ACPI serial should have PCI ... but on the other hand,
we're unlikely to see a machine without PCI that requires us to discover
ACPI serial ports.

Fix warnings about various structs declared inside parameter lists and so
on seen while compiling compat_ioctl.c.

As Matthew noted, there's no reason a machine ACPI needs to have
PCI, so I propose the following patch instead. This just makes
acpi_register_gsi()and acpi_gsi_to_irq() available independent
of CONFIG_PCI.

Does this actually do something meaningful? This stuff gets passed by value.

This is the second const-correctness patch I've seen in a couple days,
and I'd like to point out that while it's a noble cause, retrofitting
const decls onto interfaces is notorious for causing ripple effects in
APIs.

There's a point to this one. A warning got tripped when const stuff was
passed to it in patch #2, hence this as a preparatory cleanup.

In light of all of the problems with perfctr here, I've gone and done the
ifdef work for CONFIG_PERFCTR, presenting an alternative solution to the
struct problem...

http://triplehelix.org/~joshk/perfctr.diff

(note: this includes the earlier fix from wli as well, just for
convenience)

I realize that this might be a problem with regards to maintenance. Doing
this is kind of a pain in the ass.

Broke how? I hadn't seen these patches when I was initially fixing
problems with -rc2-mm1 overall. I even came up with a patch that made XFS
depend on QSORT and remove it from the fs/xfs/Makefile, but I guess that's
exactly what happened here...

Otherwise, XFS has to depend on !QSORT, and that might be bad if anyone
else depends on it. So what's the deal?

Works OK here. Is it the `console=ttyS1' which is causing the hang? If
not, what? Try removing boot options, stripping config options, etc.

If you get warnings in this:

const int c=5;
void f(int i);
void g() {
f(c);
}

then you see compiler bug. Warning is ok in

const int c=5;
void f(int* i);
void g() {
f(&c);
}

case.

It just freezes, I then use console=ttyS1 simply to capture the
messages. SYSRQ does nothing and the only way out is to press the reset
switch. I shall try 2.6.7-rc2-mm2 later with different and with no
commandline options if it also freezes.
I start with the same basic .config for all kernels (make oldconfig)
and grub is setup as below, 2.6.7-rc2-mm1 freezes and 2.6.7-rc2 is fine,
2.6.7-rc1-mm1 froze, 2.6.7-rc1 was fine.

What "all the problems"? There was an issue with warnings on
struct-declared-in-parameter-list when CONFIG_PERFCTR is disabled,
but those are trivial to fix and a fix was posted early on.

Your patch is #ifdef:ing out calls that have explicit no-op stubs
for the !CONFIG_PERFCTR_VIRTUAL case. This shouldn't be needed.
(And you're testing the wrong config option.)

Also _please_ include the maintainer of said code if you think
it has problems.

Reversing Bjorn's ACPI patch fixed it.

Doesn't apply to my, or a clean -rc2 tree :(

Probably needs to be sent to Vojtech and put in his tree.

Vojtech, gregkh referred me to you for this change. Some compilation
failures are caused by some changes to hiddev.h or some surrounding
area in -mm; this patch resolves them.

Thanks.

Just noting, if you want the -mm patches as a BK tree so that you don't
have to guess quite that much ;-) they're available as
bk://smurf.bkbits.net/linux-2.6.#-rc#-mm#.

Additional benefit: I pull from the various BK trees, instead of applying
Andrew's bk-* patches.

I try to be reasonably timely generating them.

Cool - thanks.

For the needs I had at the time, using Quilt (descendent from Andrew's
own patch tools) on his broken out patches seemed to work well. I was
trying to drive home a somewhat intrusive patch set, and so wanting to
jump on top of select *-mm releases within hours of release, before the
chaos of additional conflicting changes caused Andrew to throw up his
hands, throwing me out again ;). Well, Quilt for *-mm, on top of BK for
the 2.6.X-rcY base. (Note the use of the "optimistic past tense" above,
a rare Latin verb form ...;).

It's good to know that *-mm is available by BK as well. Thank-you.

Ahh, all right. Than the bug was introduced with 2.6.7-rc2.
