Subject: bonnie++ uninterruptible under heavy I/O load


Hello,

I'm testing a pair of new servers we just bought.
They are HP DL585 dual Opteron 844 with 8G RAM, RAID1 over 2x72G SCSI disks
(HP CISS driver) and running 2.6.11. In /proc/driver/cciss/cciss0 we have:

cciss0: HP Smart Array 5i Controller
Board ID: 0x40800e11
Firmware Version: 2.56
IRQ: 18
Logical drives: 1
Current Q depth: 0
Current # commands on controller: 0
Max Q depth since init: 6
Max # commands on controller since init: 190
Max SG entries since init: 31
cciss/c0d0: 72.83GB RAID 1(1+0)

As a test, I'm running bonnie++ while two md5sum are checksumming /dev/zero.
I see 98% CPU is correctly allocated on the two md5sum processes, but when
bonnie is in the "Writing intelligently phase" the system appears noticeably
unresponsive (high latency) and bonnie and pdflush are uninterruptible almost
all the time (D in top output). If I try to kill -9 bonnie++, it goes on
consuming I/O bandwith for several tens of seconds, before finally dieing.

Unresponsiveness is not 2.6.11 specific (we've seen the same thing on 2.6.10
and 2.6.8), not I/O scheduler specific ("as" and "deadline" behave the same)
and not CPU/SMP specific (reproduced on single P4 HT and single P3), but only
on these two DL585 servers we've seen bonnie++ resisting kill -9 for tens of
seconds.

Of course on request I can provide any other useful info.

Unfortunately this machine is on a remote location, so we don't have access to
keyboard. In some days we will be able to have a report of Alt-SysRq-T, but
until this of course we can provide any information that can be gathered on
a remote shell.

killed it, so it has to flush it out. If you run out of request entries,
you will get to sleep uninterruptibly on those while the data is
flushing. I don't see anything unexpected here, it is normal behaviour.

The real issue here is that under heavy I/O activity (bonnie is a good way to
emphasize the concept), even caused by only one task, the system becomes
quite unresponsive and "sluggish". The same can be seen under a gentoo
"emerge --metadata", and slocate has the same effect.
The problem is not only related to desktop, but i.e. on a dual opteron il
takes several seconds to have an "ls" output (on a nearly empty dir) or
simply to log in using ssh.
It seems to me that I/O scheduler gives high priority to the running process
and any other request is delayed to the point that the responsiveness of a
desktop becomes poor (say, to open a "K" menu takes several seconds on a pIV
2.8G HT).
In every case, we seen that the I/O bound processes are stuck in "D" state,
the same stands for pdflush and kswapd.

I'd guess that your problem is queueing, if you have a ton of pending
requests in the hardware it will take forever to get a new request
through. There's nothing the io scheduler can do to help you there,
really. The /proc/driver/cciss/cciss0 you originall posted, was that
from before or after running bonnie++? I have no latency experience with
cciss, at least IDE/SATA/SCSI should work alright.

Actually the CFQ that will be in the next -mm release could help you
out, it limits the hardware queue for latency reasons.

Are you sure? It lists only 190 commands run since it initialized,
that's basically nothing. 6 was the highest depth, should not be enough
to cause serious latency issues unless it was constantly at 6.

Yes I'm sure!

Isn't this number the MAX value ever samplef for "Current # commands on
controller"? It doesn't seem to be the counter of how many commands were
processed since start.

To doublecheck, I're run bonnie one more time.
This one was taken while bonnie was running:

cciss0: HP Smart Array 5i Controller
Board ID: 0x40800e11
Firmware Version: 2.56
IRQ: 18
Logical drives: 1
Current Q depth: 0
Current # commands on controller: 132
Max Q depth since init: 147
Max # commands on controller since init: 190
Max SG entries since init: 31

rereading the file, the only moving number was "Current # commands on
controller", basically oscillating between 10 and 150.

As you see, after more runs Max Q raised to 147, but I'm sure it was 6 after
that first run, and in that 1st run responsiveness was already sluggish.

Anyway, I wouldn't focus too much on CCISS, cause the only thing that's
specific of this hardware is the long delay killing bonnie.
Bad responsiveness has been found almost everywhere else.
