Subject: 2.6.15-rc5-mm3

ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.15-rc5/2.6.15-rc5-mm3/

- This kernel requires gcc-3.2.x or later for all architectures.

- I'll be non-functional from December 16 until January 2. Will be on email
a bit. Have fun.

- When reporting any bugs please be extra careful to Cc the appropriate
developer and mailing list.

- I'm not aware of any of the more serious bugs in rc5-mm1 and rc5-mm2
being fixed. If anyone finds that there's a previously-reported problem
in here then please just re-report it and don't be afraid to spread the
Cc's around.

Probably-unfixed bugs from -mm1 and -mm2 include:

- Frank Sorenson <[email protected]>: mousepad tapping stopped working.

- Roman I Khimov <[email protected]>: "Something went wrong with ACPI, my
fan is blowing constantly."

- "J.A. Magallon" <[email protected]>: usb_set_configuration() oops.

- Rachita Kothiyal <[email protected]>: kexec fails during USB init

- "Rafael J. Wysocki" <[email protected]>: ehci_hcd crashes on load sometimes

- Grant Coady <[email protected]>: "Locked up on boot just after
USB 2.0 initialised, EHCI 1.00 ..."

- Martin Bligh <[email protected]>: "Panics in pci_call_probe on both
x440 and NUMA-Q"

We need to get these things fixed up before maintainers merge into
2.6.16, please. I'll be checking!

I have some bad problems on one of my machines (NForce4) with iommu=force and
SLAB_DEBUG - forcedeth seems to corrupt memory badly then.
Also now I managed to get the machine into a state where it would
hang in the SATA driver after boot. Still investigating.

Problem is in rc5 and rc5-git4

The bug with ppp packets autoreplicating and dead keyboard is still
there. Be sure to load CPU and disk for faster reproduction of the bug.

The SATA problem went away mysteriously - probably was a broken
build tree or similar.

Forcedeth issue is still there.

For me it seems it is not so speculative. It really has effect when
running with not-so-uber
memory/machine configuration.

After some big compile during lunch-time everything slowly crawls back
to the screen when
I enter my password to unlock screen without these patches.

But with these applied I came back from my lunch and everything is as
snappy as it was when
I left it.

This is with 256M of memory and old Duron CPU in machine. Hard disk
being not too speedy either.

So, I'm really sorry to see these patches dropped instead pushing
towards mainline.

Fix is found, and will be in my tree soon.

Same fix as the previous one.

Hopefully the same one as above.

Unknown still.

What did Andrew's phrase exactly mean ?
- Still unfixed in -mm3, or
- Unfixed 'till mm2, but fixed in mm3, but not picked by you

I suppose the second, because the fix is present in -mm3.

With ehci compiled in I get a kernel panic during boot, ehci as module
and the things boots. Then 'modprobe ehci_hcd' provokes a similar panic :(

Nothing useful in logs.

Could you please use the appended patch and see if that makes things better

This is a bit sad.
On my system (1.4GHz Athlon w/512MB RAM, 768MB swap) this did have an effect.
One situation in particular where it helped (and which is a common
case for me) was when I had OpenOffice2 + Eclipse (with CDT) + xchat +
nedit + Firefox + a few konsole windows open (running KDE 3.5 btw and
all apps usually have a lot of content loaded), minimized all the apps
and then started an allyesconfig build in one window - the
allyesconfig build would drag the machine to its knees and eat up more
or less all RAM + swap, so I usually left it alone for a while to
finish and when I then came back later and reactivated the apps I had
minimized they came back pretty fast. Without the swap prefetch
patches things come back somewhat slower - it's not an earth
shattering difference, but it's definately noticable.

Apart from the feedback I've gotten directly from users of the -ck patchset
incorporating this, Andrew and lkml has had very few reports about it until
he decided to drop it. I'm still maintaining the code in -ck indefinitely
for the moment. Here's hoping he picks it up again in the future.

Cheers,
Con

David, care to put a proper header on this and send it to me so I can
add it to my tree?

same feeling for me.
I did not notice Andrew's log saying he dropped the patch in the first
place but I noticed a slower reaction time (in similar conditions as
Jesper) that lead me to the absence of swap prefetching in -mm3.
PIII-M 1GHz + 256M Ram + 256M swap here.
