Subject: linux-next: Tree for May 2

Hi all,

Changes since 201205018:

With the merge window open, conflicts are moving from tree to tree.

The i386 defconfig build is still broken and now the sparc32 defconfig is
broken as well.

The ceph tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

The nfs tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

The infiniband tree lost its build failure.

The net-next tree lost its conflicts.

The mfd tree gained conflicts against Linus' tree and still has its build
failure so I used the version from next-20120511.

The trivial tree gained conflicts against Linus' tree and the mips tree.

The tip tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree. I also added a patch
for a PowerPC boot problem.

The kvm-ppc tree lost its conflict.

The usb tree lost its build failure.

The userns tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

The akpm tree lost a conflict.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 189 trees (counting Linus' and 26 trees of patches pending
for Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds. And to Paul
Gortmaker for triage and bug fixes.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

This brekage has already made it to Linus and doesn't only affect i386.
It happens because CONFIG_MFD_PALMAS doesn't select CONFIG_IRQ_DOMAIN like
the rest of the options that were patched in 4af8be67fd99 ("regmap:
Convert regmap_irq to use irq_domain"). This is the only remaining
Kconfig entry that selects CONFIG_REGMAP_IRQ and misses CONFIG_IRQ_DOMAIN.

regmap: REMAP_IRQ should select IRQ_DOMAIN itself

CONFIG_REGMAP_IRQ relies on CONFIG_IRQ_DOMAIN since 4af8be67fd99 ("regmap:
Convert regmap_irq to use irq_domain").

Instead of ensuring all options that select REGMAP_IRQ also select
IRQ_DOMAIN, just make the former select the latter itself.

The reason we're selecting things from the users is that multi-level
selects have never seemed to be terribly robust, they've been a
noticable source of breakage with this sort of randconfig stuff in the
past which is painful and annoying, especially given the strange fixes
that tend to come from randconfig reports.

That said a "select X if Y" construct doesn't ever seem to have this
problem... I'm just sending a patch doing that now.

Multi-level pure selects *should* work correctly. So you can select
stuff that then in turn selects other stuff - and that should all be
fine.

It's *dependencies* that do not work.

So if you "select" something that depends on something else, you need
to make sure that you select all those dependencies (and because
recursive selects work, you have to check the entire *chain* of
selects to see the dependencies).

This is one reason why "select" is generally much more friendly than
"depends on". In general, we should strive to

- only make "depends on" for really *major* subsystems (like the
whole architecture, or something like networking), or on "pure user
helper variables" like the "You do want to see network drivers from
vendor Xyz" kind things.

This way "depends on" doesn't get too complicated: either it's
really big deals ("this works only on ARM") or it's high-level pure UI
stuff ("I won't bother to ask about fifteen different 3com cards,
because the user already said he isn't interested in 3com networking")

- use select for "the small details" - ie a driver should "select"
the helper stuff it needs and that people shouldn't need to even know
about (like random encryption engines etc).

but obviously there's a lot of gray areas in between, and then usually
it becomes an issue of "what are things that are sane to ask users".

But in general, a simple "select" is actually the *easiest* and most
straightforward thing, especially if the thing you are selecting
itself does not have any "depends on".

They're supposed to, and mostly do, but there's been some fragility
there. That said there's not been anything recently, perhaps I just got
hit with fallout from some development that was going on.

Right, and nor are they supposed to since it's not clear what they
should do. That's a completely different thing.

So my patch to select IRQ_DOMAIN for REGMAP_IRQ is correct since
REGMAP_IRQ now requires IRC_DOMAIN since the commit listed in the
changelog.

What's fragile is going around and adding "select IRQ_DOMAIN" to
everything that does "select REGMAP_IRQ". So I removed that and just made
IRQ_DOMAIN select REGMAP_IRQ itself.

So can this be merged or what's the issue?

Oh well, Linus already merged your git pull that you didn't cc to me and
you did it with a bogus commit message that insists this is only a
randconfig issue when in reality you never tested enabling
CONFIG_MFD_PALMAS without CONFIG_IRQ_DOMAIN when you merged 4af8be67fd99
("regmap: Convert regmap_irq to use irq_domain").

It's a different kind of fragility, things break immediately when you
add something new which is reasonably obvous as opposed to happening
at some other time due to a tooling issue and what I'm concerned about
avoiding. In any case...

> So can this be merged or what's the issue?

...Linus already merged my alternative patch which does this with a
select..if which never seems to have these issues.

Your patch *should* work but due to past issues and the fact that I can
understand why they might occur (the semantic of select is "just enable
this" which doesn't pay too much attention to the target) I'd rather go
with this different approach.

Well pardon me for actually having a cluster of machines at Google
dedicated to upstream build/boot/regression testing that verified my patch
was correct and didn't result in any kind of "fragility", or what you have
convinced yourself is "fragility."

When you propose your own version, drop all cc's (and this isn't the first
time you've done that), and then send the git pull request less than 30
minutes later, I don't really have the chance to review it. Lesson
learned, I simply won't bother to fix your code in the future.

It working right now isn't the only thing I'm concerned about, though
like I said further up the thread it's possible this is all just me
having too long a memory.

Sorry about that, I hadn't realised you were particularly attached to
the issue. I do generally drop people doing global stuff with no
particular obvious interest in the specific topic on new patches since I
know I sometimes get a bit fed up of being CCed on random things I was
tangentially involved in at some point.

> minutes later, I don't really have the chance to review it. Lesson

I guess since I've offended you so much already there's not much harm in
saying: it's always much better to send changes in a form that can be
directly applied with tools like git am. Appending a patch to the
bottom of a mail requires something like hand editing the commit after
it's been applied to extract the changelog. Not sure it actually made a
difference in this specific case but it can be the difference when
you're not sure about the approach taken, especially for small patches
where it's quick and simple to write and test the replacement.

JFTR all randconfig means is that it doesn't seem like a configuration a
human is likely to generate for use on an actual system as opposed to
build coverage - in this case the driver is for the PMIC for some new
ARM SoCs so it's unlikely that someone would want to run the driver on a
system that doesn't have DT (and hence IRQ domains) enabled.

With this sort of dependency error failures are generally either in
configurations you'd expect people to want to run (which obviously
affect users), in allXconfig builds (which get run a lot for all sorts
of reasons and so are urgent even if it's unlikely people will use them
in production) or in randconfig builds (which should work and are
potentially sensible configurations but can also turn up combinations
that aren't that realistic). All of these should be fixed if they
break.
