Subject: Linux 4.14-rc2

I'm back to my usual Sunday release schedule, and rc2 is out there in
all the normal places.

This was a fairly usual rc2, with a very quiet beginning of the week,
and then most changes came in on Friday afternoon and Saturday (with
the last few ones showing up Sunday morning).

Normally I tend to dislike how that pushes most of my work into the
weekend, but this time I took advantage of it, spending the quiet part
of last week diving instead.

Anyway, the only unusual thing worth noting here is that the security
subsystem pull request that came in during the merge window got
rejected due to problems, and so rc2 ends up with most of that
security pull having been merged in independent pieces instead.

As a result, about 30% of the rc2 patches are actually things that
technically came in during the merge window, but were delayed into rc2
due to that issue.

Other than that, it's the usual mix of random stuff. Drivers
(networking, rdma and gpu stand out), architecture fixes (x86, mips,
s390, parisc, powerpc, arm), some filesystem things, generic
networking and Documentation. And the random smattering everywhere.

Nothing stands out, although hopefully we've gotten over all the x86
ASID issues. Knock wood.

Shortlog appended as a rough overview of the details.

Go test it,

Linus

Downloading & applying 4.14-rc2 [patch] <https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/rawdiff/?id=v4.14-rc2&id2=v4.13>

from kernel.org (home page) gives me a file that does not apply cleanly to v4.13:

I also notice that the [pgp] signing is not there. Is that normal?

Hmm. The rc patches are automatically generated from the git tree
these days, so I don't have control over them.

It does sound like you might have caught it while it was being generated:

> patch unexpectedly ends in middle of line

which would seem to indicate that maybe you just caught it while it
was still being generated.

But I just tried it myself, and get the same breakage. In fact, the
patch it downloads is exactly 50397184 bytes in size. That may not
sound like a round number, but it is: it is hex 0x3010000, so it's
evenly divisible by 65536.

Methinks there's some incorrect flushing of block IO going on. Konstantin?

> I also notice that the [pgp] signing is not there. Is that normal?

So I don't sign the rc patches any more because I don't generate them
(but the final release patches and tar-balls I *do* sign).

But maybe they could be signed by some kernel.org key.

Again, that would be an automation issue..

Side note: instead of downloading a 50MB patch, you could probably use
the same amount of bandwidth to download and build git, and then use
that to download much smaller incremental updates.

I'm surprised that people still even use those nasty patches and tar-balls.

which would seem to indicate that maybe you just caught it while it
was still being generated.

Konstantin?

So I don't sign the rc patches any more because I don't generate them
(but the final release patches and tar-balls I *do* sign).

But maybe they could be signed by some kernel.org key.

Again, that would be an automation issue..

Ick, looks like the cache truncation bug is still not fixed in the upstream cgit and the EPEL update blew away my locally fixed package (which is my fault, as I should have versionlocked it). The fixed version is now in place and truncated caches are purged. It should generate valid patches now.

Yes, see https://www.kernel.org/rc-tarballs-and-patches-starting-with-412-rc1.html
