Hi Christoph,
We tested 2.6.24-rc5 + 76be895001f2b0bee42a7685e942d3e08d5dd46c
For 2.6.24-rc5 before that patch, slub had a performance penalty of
6.19%. With the patch, slub's performance penalty was reduced to 4.38%.
This is great progress. Can you think of anything else worth trying?

Ahhh.. Good to hear that the issue on x86_64 gets better. I am still
waiting for a test with the patchset that I did specifically to address
your regression: http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/10/27/245 (where I tried to
come up with an in kernel benchmark that exposes the issue even more)? It
is much more likely now that this patchset in mm addresses your regression
since the hackbench performance improvement fix already reduce it
partially.
2.6.25 will add the performance enhancements for the free patch that I
hope will address your issues. In addition the fastpath was reworked. See
the patch mentioned above.
2.6.26 (hopefully) will remove the per cpu array lookups that are
currently necessary on x86 and other platforms through improvements to
the way that percpu data is handled. That leads to further fastpath
improvements.
There are also ways to optimize the partial block handling further by f.e.
switching the percpu slab on free in order to have a higher fastpath rate.

I sent you a mail on December 6th ... here are the contents of that
mail:

After investigation, there are two issues.
Patch 8/10 oopses during the run, typically after about an hour.
Patch 10/10 oopses during boot. I haven't been able to reproduce this
on my quad-core machine, but it happens every time for them on their
dual quad-core machine.
---
Applying just patches 1-7 and 9 leads to a slight (0.34%) performance
reduction compared to slub. That is 6.45% versus slab, reduces to 6.79%
with the 8 patches applied.

Dec 6th? I was on vacation then and it seems that I was unable to
reproduce the oopses. Can I get some backtraces or other information
that would allow me to diagnose the problem?

Patch 8 is the one that optimizes the fastpath. How much runtime
variability have these tests?

I'll ask to see what they have.

About 0.1-0.2% 0.3% is considered significant.

The results are that stable? A kernel compilation which slightly
rearranges cachelines due to code and data changes typically leads to a
larger variance on my 8 way box (gets even larger under NUMA). I would
expect that the variations on a database load would be more significant.
I repeatedly saw patches from Intel to do minor changes to SLAB that
increase performance by 0.5% or so (like the recent removal of a BUG_ON
for performance reasons). These do not regress again when you build a
newer kernel release?

The load runs for a long time. You can reduce variance by increasing
your sample size (ok, it's twelve years since I've done a stats course ...)

No, they don't. Unless someone's broken something (eg putting pages on
the LRU in the wrong order so we don't get merges any more ;-)

I've found one backtrace which seems to be relevant. I believe this is
due to 8/10.
I don't think the kernel for this run was saved, so we'll have to do a
new run if you need more information than this.

Looks like NULL pointer dereferences. Rest may just be the consequence
of the oops. Not enough information though to figure out exactly what
is going on and the current code in mm may be different. Sigh. I did a lot
of testing over the weekend and did not encounter any problems. Some
config differences may have cause it?
I have extracted the current slub stuff from mm, rediffed it against
upstream and put it on git.kernel.org
do a
git pull git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/christoph/vm.git performance
to get the changes.
(more on the tests I did will come as a response to the other email from
you).

I tried over the weekend to get reproducable results after applying each
patch using tbench (shows a similar regression to what you are seeing
1-4%) but each kernel build has different performance charateristics.
Probably due to the way code is aligned in cachelines? Here are the slab
numbes for a number of runs with different kernel builds:
2.6.24-rc8 slab (x86_64 8p SMP 8G)
Throughput 2316.87 MB/sec 8 procs
Throughput 2257.49 MB/sec 8 procs
Throughput 2264.11 MB/sec 8 procs
Throughput 2280.62 MB/sec 8 procs
So a ~3% variance!
I was able to get a feel (from the measurements that are jumping around)
that some patches may cause tbench performance to drop a bit. In
particular the patch before the cmpxchg_local must add the page->end
field. The cmpxchg_local patch must offset that cost in order to make this
a performance increase.
It would be great if you could get stable results on these (with multiple
differently compiled kernels! Apply some patch that should have no
performance impact but adds some code to verify). I saw an overall slight
performance decrease on tbench (still doubting how much I can trust those
numbers) so lets not merge the series upstream until we have more data).
Patches that I would recommend to test individually if you could do it
(get the series via git pull
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/christoph/vm.git performance):
0006-Use-non-atomic-unlock.patch
Surprisingly this one caused a 1% regression in some of my tests.
Maybe the cacheline is held longer if no atomic op is used during
unlock?
0005-Add-parameter-to-add_partial-to-avoid-having-two-fun.patch
I mostly saw performance increases (1-2%) on this one.
0009-SLUB-Avoid-folding-functions-into-__slab_alloc-and.patch
0010-Move-kmem_cache_node-determination-into-add_full-par.patch
The cmpxchg stuff is a group of 3 patches. The first two should cause a
slight performance decrease which needs at least to be offset by the third
one.
0014-SLUB-Use-unique-end-pointer-for-each-slab-page.patch
0015-slub-provide-unique-end-marker-for-each-slab-fix.patch
0017-SLUB-Alternate-fast-paths-using-cmpxchg_local.patch
0018-SLUB-Do-our-own-locking-to-avoid-extraneous-memory.patch
0019-SLUB-Own-locking-checkpatch-fixes.patch
0021-SLUB-Restructure-slab_alloc-to-flow-in-execution-se.patch

The thing is that each run takes approximately 4 hours on a machine
which has other patches to try too. I'm not comfortable with asking my
colleagues to try various combinations on a whim. What I've asked for
is:
2.6.24-rc8 w/ SLAB
2.6.24-rc8 w/ SLUB
2.6.24-rc8 w/ SLUB and your 22 patches applied.
So that should be done in about 12 hours time.
Obviously, if we see problems with all 22 patches, we'll try bisection
search ... and I think you've identified some good points to split at
below, but testing all possible combinations of these 22 patches with
and without some other random changes isn't feasible.
I also don't understand the dependency tree -- you seem to be saying
that we could apply patch 6 without patches 1-5 and test that.

Intel are signing my paycheques ... these opinions are still mine
"Bill, look, we understand that you're interested in selling us this
operating system, but compare it to ours. We can't possibly take such
a retrograde step."

You could do that. Many patches can be moved at will, some require minor
mods to apply.

With these patches applied to 2.6.24-rc8, the perf team are seeing
oopses while running the benchmark. They're currently trying to narrow
down which of the patches it is. I'll get an oops for you to study when
they've figured that out.

There is also new code upstream now with significant changes that
affect performance. It may not be worthwhile to continue with 2.6.24-rc8
+ patches.
