IOW, you just append, say, a single 'a' character to a name that doesn't already end in a slash? And if it still does happen with that, perhaps you could have some logic that only appends the 'a' to names that end with numbers. Does it stop happening? The machine keeps running, right? So you can try this out without rebooting, just changing when you append the character?
