In 99% of the cases you fix the problem because the original author has abandoned the code or does no longer care about it. Ask me about it. Once upon a time, I just wanted to use a Web Framework [1] for a project. Now I'm one of the main developers of it. Not because I wanted to be but out of pure necessity.
