A slight improvement: the kernel no longer oopses but still never completely makes it thru boot. I've attached the dmesg from the box at boot with the drivers compiled in-kernel. The card appears to be detected, it appears to go through the IDs and does find my devices but hangs after the last message. If I build the driver as a module, the insmod hangs loading the module. Switching to another terminal and viewing dmesg output show a similar message as attached, except in this order: - detection of the card ("scsi0: Adaptec AIC7XXX" etc etc) - detection of the devices ("host 0 channel 0 id 2 lun 0\n Vendor:HP" etc etc) - ONE instance of the failed detection message I waited for ~ 5 minutes before deciding the detection was dead and rebooted. insmod was the still hung and a 'lsmod' showed the aic7xxx driver stuck as '(initializing).' .. but at least there's no more oops. :) Also, I find it interesting my dat drive is discovered as ID2.. when it's ID3. This is confirmed by visual check, the adaptec card's boot detection and $OTHER_OS using the drive. The Zipdrive is at ID6 (and appears to be detected correctly. -r ps.. thanks for the help so far. ------=_NextPart_000_000B_01C2900C.A2B6C710 Content-Type: text/plain; name="dmesg2.txt" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="dmesg2.txt" Linux version 2.4.19-ac4 (root@otus) (gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 = (release)) #40 Tue Nov 19 16:08:28 EST 2002=0D =0DBIOS-provided physical RAM map:=0D =0D BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009fc00 (usable)=0D =0D BIOS-e820: 000000000009fc00 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved)=0D =0D BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved)=0D =0D BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000001fff0000 (usable)=0D =0D BIOS-e820: 000000001fff0000 - 000000001fff8000 (ACPI data)=0D =0D BIOS-e820: 000000001fff8000 - 0000000020000000 (ACPI NVS)=0D =0D BIOS-e820: 00000000ffff0000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved)=0D =0D511MB LOWMEM available.=0D =0DOn node 0 totalpages: 131056=0D =0Dzone(0): 4096 pages.=0D =0Dzone(1): 126960 pages.=0D =0Dzone(2): 0 pages.=0D =0DKernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=3DLinux-Serial ro root=3D303 = hdd=3Dide-scsi console=3DttyS0,38400 console=3Dtty0=0D =0Dide_setup: hdd=3Dide-scsi=0D =0DLocal APIC disabled by BIOS -- reenabling.=0D =0DFound and enabled local APIC!=0D =0DInitializing CPU#0=0D =0DDetected 798.111 MHz processor.=0D =0DConsole: colour VGA+ 80x50=0D =0DCalibrating delay loop... 1592.52 BogoMIPS=0D =0DMemory: 515328k/524224k available (1017k kernel code, 8508k reserved, = 467k data, 88k init, 0k highmem)=0D =0DDentry cache hash table entries: 65536 (order: 7, 524288 bytes)=0D =0DInode cache hash table entries: 32768 (order: 6, 262144 bytes)=0D =0DMount cache hash table entries: 512 (order: 0, 4096 bytes)=0D =0DBuffer cache hash table entries: 32768 (order: 5, 131072 bytes)=0D =0DPage-cache hash table entries: 131072 (order: 7, 524288 bytes)=0D =0DCPU: L1 I cache: 16K, L1 D cache: 16K=0D =0DCPU: L2 cache: 256K=0D =0DIntel machine check architecture supported.=0D =0DIntel machine check reporting enabled on CPU#0.=0D =0DCPU: Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) stepping 06=0D =0DEnabling fast FPU save and restore... done.=0D =0DEnabling unmasked SIMD FPU exception support... done.=0D =0DChecking 'hlt' instruction...
