The transmission for i2c should in theory be little endian,(but often isn't) It is to deal with these case that we have the swapped functions. i2c_smbus_write_word_swapped for example. Here the i2c subsystem has no way of knowing if you are reading two 1 byte registers or 1 2 byte register. Hence it can't do the reordering and will present them as a pair of bytes in whatever the wire order was.
