I actually think this section is correct as written - it's explicitly about the gmail web interface. Using gmail for email submission (note that doesn't involve IMAP) is a bit out of scope for a document that is explicitly about email *clients*. Still, we could add a line saying that gmail can be used in that mode, probably with a reference to the mutt configuration in your other patch. Please feel free to send a patch along those lines.
