The thing which looked most odd to me was that both controllers appear to be configured in native mode on IRQ 18 and for some reason this appears to give some trouble. In particular he was seeing an "unhandled interrupt" error on IRQ 18. Enabling the sata_piix driver and disabling the ide_piix code was enough to get the machine to boot, but I don't know what the real cause of the problem.
