[1.] One line summary of the problem: ASUS A7V8X-X LAN/SOUND at random freezes under linux-2.4.20 totally, no response [2.] Full description of the problem/report: I searched the web on this, but couldn't find anything useful. The only hint was to add the option mem=nopentium to the bootparams. No differences. Most people reported on the sound/lan not found on this board. But the symptom is totally different here. The system becomes totally unresponsible in my case. At random the system freezes totally. No ping, no keyboard, no Ctrl-Alt-Del (it's not commented out). The only possibility is to press pwr on button longer than 4s (power down the ATX power supply). I contacted ASUS but didn't get an answer yet (maybe they'll look into this ?!). memtest ran for at least 12 hours without any error. All other hardware checks have been done (cable, memmodules, cpu seated correctly and so on) [3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel): kernel [4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version): Linux version 2.4.20-4GB-athlon (root@Athlon.suse.de) (gcc version 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)) #1 Sat Feb 7 02:00:47 UTC 2004 [5.] Output of Oops.. message (if applicable) with symbolic information resolved (see Documentation/oops-tracing.txt) No Oops, nothing is output [6.] A small shell script or example program which triggers the problem (if possible) not available [7.] Environment [7.1.] Software (add the output of the ver_linux script here) [7.2.] Processor information (from /proc/cpuinfo): processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 6 model : 10 model name : AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2500+ stepping : 0 cpu MHz : 1822.568 cache size : 512 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow bogomips : 3630.69 [7.3.] Module information (from /proc/modules): lp 6400 0 (autoclean) parport_pc 28200 1 parport 25352 1 [lp parport_pc] usbserial 19580 0 (autoclean) (unused) videodev 6176 0 (autoclean) radeon 111392 1 agpgart 38656 3 (autoclean) isa-pnp 31560 0 (unused) ipv6 145108 -1 (autoclean) keybdev 2124 0 (unused) hid 19428 0 (unused) mousedev 4372 1 joydev 5792 0 (unused) evdev 4192 0 (unused) input 3264 0 [keybdev hid mousedev joydev evdev] usb-uhci 23664 0 (unused) ehci-hcd 17612 0 (unused) usbcore 63116 1 [usbserial hid usb-uhci ehci-hcd] raw1394 15828 0 (unused) ieee1394 36496 0 [raw1394] via-rhine 12912 1 mii 2528 0 [via-rhine] lvm-mod 67812 0 (autoclean) reiserfs 217396 6 [7.4.] Loaded driver and hardware information (/proc/ioports, /proc/iomem) # cat /proc/ioports 0000-001f : dma1 0020-003f : pic1 0040-005f : timer 0060-006f : keyboard 0070-007f : rtc 0080-008f : dma page reg 00a0-00bf : pic2 00c0-00df : dma2 00f0-00ff : fpu 0170-0177 : ide1 01f0-01f7 : ide0 0376-0376 : ide1 0378-037a : parport0 03c0-03df : vesafb 03f6-03f6 : ide0 03f8-03ff : serial(auto) 0cf8-0cff : PCI conf1 a400-a4ff : VIA Technologies, Inc.
