I was wrong. It compiles but won't work right:

a.c:
char msg[] = "boo";

b.c:
#include <stdio.h>
extern char *msg;
int main() {
	puts(msg);
	return 0;
}

# gcc b.c a.c
# ./a.out
Segmentation fault
