Your problem is a "singing capacitor", caused by cheap motherboard components. The problem appeared in 2.6.0 because that's when the timer frequency changed from 100HZ to 1000HZ. Starting with 2.6.14 you can work around this by compiling with HZ set to 250 or 100. But it's fundamentally a hardware problem.
