The machine is a HP Proliant DL320 G3, 2.9 Ghz Celeron, 1GB RAM. Chipset is an Intel E7221 (ICH6 rev 3). The machine felt very slow, so I tried kernel 2.6.13 on it. With kernel 2.6, it works like a charm. According to the changelog of 2.4.32-rc3, libata is updated to 2.6.x latest. I've experienced the same performance problem a while ago with an Intel D915GUX board / kernel 2.4.31. This board is also ICH6 based. Below are the boot messages from both kernels on the same hardware, hope it helps debugging the issue. Please CC: answers.
