I am not 100% sure of the hardware, but basically: - AMD 64 processor - Asus extreme AX 300 SE/t mainboard The disk subsystem failed and the disks are now read-only. We've had the same failure on the very same box 4 months ago. That time the problem apparently converted itself into an issue that could be solved by running fsck on the disks. Today the problem appears as bad. But I don't feel like asking her to do that all often. Upgrading the box to a newer kernel might help, but I fear the mess that will be caused by the user space tools incompatibilities. The plan was to first update the distrib (to ubuntu 5.10, w/ kernel 2.6.12.9). I don't have physical access to the box, nor do I know any Pinguin lover in the area. That sounds to me like a hardware issue, but would gladly accept some external input. Below some more info.
