Note that there are a few additions to the kernel, some are known to everyone (kdb), and the others are self-bred facilities for tracing, logging across kexec-invocations, and specialized memory pools (respectively, dandalf, permamem, prebb), but these are not related to the problem that we see here. Just for the record, I also used a modified version of gcc 4.1.1 that adds a switch (see the 'Re: [PATCH] add -foverride-comp-dir' thread on gcc-devel) - it should also be completely disconnected from this problem as well. This kernel was also patched for retrying to mount the root dev with a timeout, also to reduce execution time. Sorry that I can't test with the vanilla kernel - it's a specialized environment. All changes are available under GPL on request.
