See part 1 of this series for a description of the approach. This patch abstracts all references to the ext2-specific inode union through the following inlin3 function: static inline struct ext2_inode_info *ext2_i (struct inode *inode) { return (struct ext2_inode_info *) &(inode->u); } The ext2_i member of the struct inode union is renamed as ext2_inode_info to simplify detection of references to the inode union from out-of-tree ext2 code. To apply this patch: cd /your/source/tree cat this/patch | patch -p0 I strongly recommended that this patch not be tested on a system containing valuable data - user mode linux is the way to go. -- Daniel --- ../2.4.17.clean/fs/ext2/dir.c Mon Sep 17 16:16:30 2001 +++ ./fs/ext2/dir.c Thu Dec 27 02:40:12 2001 @@ -300,6 +300,7 @@ struct ext2_dir_entry_2 * ext2_find_entry (struct inode * dir, struct dentry *dentry, struct page ** res_page) { + struct ext2_inode_info *ei = ext2_i(dir);
