One additional observance: Without your hotfix starting /usr/sbin/hald takes quite longer (about 3 to 5 seconds) compared to about a half second with your hotfix. Same behaviour with the commit found by bisect: Before that commit hald starts fast and from that commit hald takes some seconds. To me it looks like that probing (?) by /usr/sbin/hald maybe left the ide-cd in some erroneous state which result in a freeze after about 2 minutes?
