I have installed latest kernel last week, and since then have the next problem: Everytime I do a job involving filesystem access in large amounts (tasks like cp -R, find, ....) the system becomes to slow, it stops responding to the keyboard or mouse, and multimedia apps starts becoming to slow playing music and then it is just a noise what I hear. Just when the task end, the system comes to a normal state again. By example: I have : root@Voyager:/usr/src/linux/scripts# cd /mnt/home/glozano root@Voyager:/mnt/home/glozano# du -s 101892 . root@Voyager:/mnt/home/glozano# cp -R * /home/glozano then the system comes to slow.... when copy ends everything is normal again. I booted my system with the 2.4.17 and it does not happen. root@Voyager:/mnt/home/glozano# cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : GenuineIntel cpu family : 15 model : 1 model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz stepping : 2 cpu MHz : 1594.887 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 2 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm bogomips : 3185.04 No modules support in the kernel. root@Voyager:/mnt/home/glozano# cat /proc/ioports 0000-001f : dma1 0020-003f : pic1 0040-005f : timer 0060-006f : keyboard 0070-007f : rtc 0080-008f : dma page reg 00a0-00bf : pic2 00c0-00df : dma2 00f0-00ff : fpu 0170-0177 : ide1 01f0-01f7 : ide0 02f8-02ff : serial(auto) 0376-0376 : ide1 03c0-03df : vga+ 03f6-03f6 : ide0 03f8-03ff : serial(auto) 0cf8-0cff : PCI conf1 c000-cfff : PCI Bus #01 c800-c8ff : ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF d000-dfff : PCI Bus #02 df00-df3f : Intel Corp. 82820 (ICH2) Chipset Ethernet Controller df00-df3f : eepro100 df80-df9f : Creative Labs SB Live!
