My apologies for the garbled subject first time round.) Dear Kernel Folks, I am trying to determine the cause of the poor performance of a an IDE DVD device on my new machine. I have an IDE Panasonic DF-210-type DVD-RAM/R/ROM in a new machine with Soyo KT333 motherboard. It transfers data slowly (below DVD speed), consumes large amounts of system time, and slows down the user interface and even system clock (which can run as slow as 1/4 speed while the drive is going). The interrupt ERR count below seems to be mostly related to use of the DVD drive. Maybe it's something simple. If not, I'll be glad to do further work to help diagnose the problem. Here are some possibly relevant details: # uname -a Linux dhcppc4 2.4.20-pre5-ac1 #4 Sun Sep 1 22:06:11 PDT 2002 i686 unknown # cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 6 model : 6 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2100+ stepping : 2 cpu MHz : 1729.054 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow bogomips : 3447.19 # cat /proc/interrupts CPU0 0: 2389082 XT-PIC timer 1: 4 XT-PIC keyboard 2: 0 XT-PIC cascade 5: 107 XT-PIC usb-uhci 8: 1293953 XT-PIC rtc 10: 0 XT-PIC usb-uhci 11: 124849 XT-PIC eth0, EMU10K1 12: 46058 XT-PIC usb-uhci, usb-uhci, ehci-hcd, cmpci 14: 56020 XT-PIC ide0 15: 7 XT-PIC ide1 NMI: 0 LOC: 2388955 ERR: 927 MIS: 0 # dmesg | more Linux version 2.4.20-pre5-ac1 (root@dhcppc4) (gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-110)) #4 Sun Sep 1 22:06:11 PDT 2002 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 00000000000a0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000005fff0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000005fff0000 - 000000005fff3000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 000000005fff3000 - 0000000060000000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 00000000ffff0000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) 639MB HIGHMEM available. 896MB LOWMEM available.
