(may doing the whole loading manually). # modprobe drm_kms_helper edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/lg42lb9df_hdmi1.edid I have no idea why it fails for you, here on the systems I have it works fine (on one where everything is built into the kernel I did set the cmdline arguments via CONFIG_CMDLINE="..."
