Trond also expressed interest in something like this for NFS. It essentially passes a bitflag with the intent of the lookup, (e.g. create, mkdir, getattr, etc) so that you can optionally complete the lookup and do the operation in one go. The VFS patch to add intent-based lookup (not for inclusion, just discussion) below.
