Subject: [PATCH V5 00/23] ext4: Add inline data support.

Hi list,

this is another try for the inline data support for ext4.
I have runned all the xfstests cases and fixes the bugs it found.
Hope it is stable now for the inclusion.

So in genernal, I have runned several test cases and try to prove
that it works.

A fsstats shows the directory information for my home.

So with inode size equals 256, more than 50% directory can be inlined.

I have also runned several other test cases to prove the peroformance gain,
And I'd like to describe the result here. For more test details, please see below.

For a dir iteration test, if most of the dirs are inlined, we can see a 10 fold
speed up(240ms vs. 2250ms) in dir iteration(try to find a not-exist file). Yes,
that is expected. ;)

With a normal kernel tar and directory iteration test, we can find a 1.5% space
saving(with cluster size=4096, I would imagine a better result with bigalloc enabled).
As for the directory iteration, we can see a 22.4% speedup.

I ran postmark for 2 senarios, one with file size between 11 and 500 which is good
for inline data test, and another with file size between 100 and 50000. We can see
a 32.8%(49s vs. 73s) improvement for the first one, and 3.6%(805s vs. 835s) for the
latter.

The final test case is the fs_mark. I ran the different sync modes, and we can see
more than 100% increase if we does the sync and this is really a huge win.

Subject: [PATCH V5 01/23] ext4: Move extra inode read to a new function.

there does exist some information starting from the end
of i_extra_size. With inline data added, this procedure
is more complicated. So move it to a new function named

Subject: [PATCH V5 07/23] ext4: Add delalloc support for inline data.

For delayed allocation mode, we write to inline data if the file
is small enough. And in case of we write to some offset larger
than the inline size, the 1st page is dirtied, so that
ext4_da_writepages can handle the conversion. When the 1st page
is initialized with blocks, the inline part is removed.

Subject: [PATCH V5 08/23] ext4: Create a new function ext4_init_new_dir.

Currently, the initialization of dot and dotdot are encapsulated in
ext4_mkdir and also bond with dir_block. So create a new function
named ext4_init_new_dir and the initialization is moved to
ext4_init_dot_dotdot which only accepts a 'de'.

Subject: [PATCH V5 09/23] ext4: Refactor __ext4_check_dir_entry to accepts start and size.

__ext4_check_dir_entry is used to check whether the de is over
the block boundary. Now with inline data, it could be within the
block boundary while exceeds the inode size. So check this function

Subject: [PATCH V5 11/23] ext4: let add_dir_entry handle inline data properly.

This patch let add_dir_entry handle the inline data case. So the
dir is initialized as inline dir first and then we can try to add
some files to it, when the inline space can't hold all the entries,
a dir block will be created and the dir entry will be moved to it.

Subject: [PATCH V5 18/23] ext4: let ext4_rename handle inline dir.

In case of we rename a dir, ext4_rename has to read the dir block
and change its dotdot's information. The old ext4_rename encapsulated
the dir_block read into itself. So this patch try to add a new function
ext4_get_dir_block which get the dir buffer information so the

I had an idea which I think would make inline directories more
efficient, although it wouldn't be a backwards compatible change with
the existing patch sets to date.

We don't actually need to store the entry for '.', since we know what
that should be, and we could just store the parent directory in a
4-byte entry. By not storing the full directory entries for "." and
"..", we would save 20 bytes, which for a 256 byte inode where only
120 bytes or so are available for the inline directory, is pretty
significant. (We can just synthesize them for the benefit of readdir
and lookup --- and I'm pretty sure the VFS is doing its own synthesis
for "." and possibly ".." already as far as lookup is concerned.)

One concern is that we have expanded the dentries for "." and ".." to store the Lustre FID in the expanded dirent. The "." dirent isn't needed for in-inode directories, and I suppose we could get the Lustre ".." FID from the "link" xattr (parent inode+name) already stored in the inode as well... Both are useful for robustness with external directory files, but they aren't useful inside the inode.

Other than that, it seems reasonable to economize on space inside the inode. It makes the handling a bit more complex.

As andreas said in another e-mail, that would make the codes a little
complex. So in general, in my previous version, I just tried to refactor
most of the codes so that they can work for both inline inode and dir
blocks. But if these changes are merged, we have to re-write all of the
codes that are currently shared, such as ext4_find_entry, empty_dir,
ext4_add_entry etc.

Having said that, maybe it is worth the codes effort if we can see a
great improvement for inline dir. Since Andreas and you are both OK with
this new solution, I can try to re-work the inline data patch to support it.

Well, we may not need to rewrite as much as you think. For one thing,
as I mentioned, I don't think the VFS passes '.' and '..' lookup
requests down to the file system anyway, and even if it did, you could
just have a function which checks for '.' and '..' and returns the
correct value if necessary. So I think you wouldn't need to rewrite
all of these functions, since the fundamental layout of the directory
wouldn't be changing. It's just that we're skipping the '.' and '..'
entries, and the "standard" directory layout would be starting 4 bytes
later (after the '..' inode number).

So it's probably worth taking a look to see how much of an increase in
complexity would actually be involved.

Actually, NFS can submit lookups for ".." for path linkage IIRC, since we had to implement a patch to fix this for ext4 and Lustre at one time.

Agreed, the "." and ".." lookups are already special cases in the lookup code.
