Because after this patch ext4_ext_drop_refs() is only used in three places - ext4_free_ext_path(), ext4_find_extent(), and mext_check_coverage(). The use in mext_check_coverage() can be actually removed - get_ext_path() -> ext4_find_extent() takes care of dropping the references. And then ext4_ext_drop_refs() can be made static making things more obvious...
