Now the last few days(not being at a motel)I am not seeing this fire off. only thing that I can think of right now is the friends house uses WPA instead of some open the browser and enter the key code to access the internet(or maybe no WEP/WPA). here is dmesg when being at my friends house, with no warning. http://fpaste.org/2i7w/ I am going to be at a motel the next few days, so I will see if this is reproduceable, and if I have time will bisect.
