Below is the list of build error/warning regressions/improvements in
v3.10-rc1[1] compared to v3.9[2].
Summarized:
- build errors: +33/-18
- build warnings: +163/-169
Note that there may be false regressions, as some logs are incomplete.
Still, they're build errors/warnings.
As I haven't mastered kup yet, there's no verbose summary at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geert/linux-log/v3.10-rc1.summary.gz
Happy fixing! ;-)
Thanks to the linux-next team for providing the build service.

This really looks like a host environment issue.
PTRACE_O_TRACESYSGOOD for example is defined in /usr/include/linux/ptrace.h

I have a patch for this in my inbox, I'll get to it before 3.10-rc2 is
out, thanks.

I'm pretty sure people are also already working on this, thanks.

How does this happen? 'size' is clearly a size_t in this function so "%zu" is correct.
Does some arch (or gcc) confuse these?

that seems to a BUILD_BUG_ON that only triggers on s390, because we have
L1_CACHE_BYTES defined with 256 bytes... which seems to be more than any
other architecture has.
There was a different network driver that had a similar BUILD_BUG_ON, but
it got removed.
Right, it was the igb driver:

Yep, just like e.g. htobe32().

Possibly. We're cross compiling these on powerpc so perhaps we need to update the cross compiler.

Actually these are in both /usr/include/sys/ptrace.h and
/usr/include/linux/ptrace.h on
my system.

/usr/include/endian.h

Perhaps just the cross C library? On Ubuntu 10.04, both
/usr/include/endian.h and
/usr/include/sys/ptrace.h are provided by libc6-dev.

:) It has given us some trouble over the years.
I'll talk to Stephen tomorrow about it and see if we can get it working
again.

I recall to have acked patch(es) related to the serial (console) driver.
It is caused by CONFIG_SERIAL_ATMEL no set in .config, but the machine code
still writes to atmel_default_console_device when you call
at32_setup_serial_console().
Two ways to fix, either select the SERIAL_ATMEL symbol or ifdef around the
atmel_default_console_device assignment in the machine code.

I suspect this is caused by not optimizing for size.

Sure, but so far arch/avr doesn't fall under my jurisdiction, so I
haven't sent it
upstream yet ;-)
Anyway, it seems I have accumulated too many patches for exotic
arches, so I plan
to create an exotic-arch-fixes branch, to be pulled by Linus in a few rcs...

Yep, my patch did the latter.

The critical value here is EFX_RX_USR_BUF_SIZE. The hardware constrains
it to be a multiple of 32, but for performance reasons it also ought to
be a multiple of the cache line size(s). In our internal development
branch it has already been reduced to 1792, which is a multiple of 256
and should satisfy the BUILD_BUG_ON check. I'll post a patch shortly.

This is caused by cris not using the generic drivers/Kconfig, and thus not
traversing drivers/video/console/Kconfig.
As the build system does traverse drivers/video/console/Makefile, fonts.c
is compiled with an inconsistent configuration.
Two solutions:
1. Add drivers/video/console/Kconfig to arch/cris/Kconfig,
2. Switch cris to drivers/Kconfig,
I prefer two, as this is what's done by all (except h8300) other
architectures. This will seriously broaden the scope of allmodconfig,
though, and require more fixes (e.g. missing <asm/vga.h>).
Note: The decision logic for compiling drivers/video/console/fonts.c is
overly complicated, and seems to be buggy for some stuff living
outside drivers drivers/video (drivers/media/platform/vivi.c and
drivers/staging/media/solo6x10/solo6x10-enc.c). I think this should
be resolved in Kconfig logic, using a new FONT_SUPPORT
symbol (FONTS is already taken).

I would have no objections a conversion of CRIS to use the
drivers/Kconfig, though it feels a bit strange to compile
video drivers for SoCs that don't have any video out hardware.

We started getting these PTRACE_ errors on Nov 4, 2011. Just before
that, we have commit 966e803ab125 ("um: unify ptrace_user.h") which seems
to have lost the include of linux/ptrace.h and now only includes
sys/ptrace.h ...

So htobe32 etc were introduced in glibc 2.9 - our build environment is
glibc 2.3 ... Documentation/Changes does not specify a minimum version of
glibc.

This is a UML "requirement", not a generic Linux build environment
requirement.
Introduced by
commit d824d06328904f610b47652dcd488392f2fc62b6
Author: Al Viro <[email protected]>
Date: Thu Apr 5 23:35:03 2012 -0400
um: switch cow_user.h to htobe{32,64}/betoh{32,64}
... rather than open-coding the 64bit versions. endian.h has those guys.

Hi Geert,
My understanding is that this driver shouldn't depend on (PCI || EISA)
but rather on PCI because the PCI support in that driver do not
seem to be optional.
