I'm just doing my part in getting the new kernel stable
kernel: linux-2.5.43
hardware:DELL Inspiron 8100
mouse: Logitech USB Optical Mouse
config:
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV
CONFIG_SERIO
CONFIG_SERIO_I8042
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSE
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2
CONFIG_USB
CONFIG_USB_HID
CONFIG_USB_HIDINPUT
/dev/input/mice and /dev/input/mouse0 exist and are used for my internal PS/2
mouse.
dmesg shows that USB mouse exists, and also shows insert and removes
correctly.
However no /dev/input/mouse1 apears nor do events for this mouse apear on
/dev/input/mice.

How hard? Does numlock still work? Can you tell if the CPU is busy
afterwards (ie, your laptop remains hot).

I did find out that it only happens when my compact flash card is insurted.
Without it I can do a kill of the cardmgr.
I haven't checked numlock. But I can't switch consoles with alt+f?.
I'll do some more test this evening in the hotel.

So it looks like you don't have a driver for the mouse loaded (should be hid).
Can you check this in driverfs? (You used to be able to do this in
/proc/bus/usb/drivers, but the maintainer knew better :-{)
If you did this as modules, lsmod would be good to know too.
Also, there is a problem with 2.5.43, in that the core driver model stuff got
screwed up. That caused problem if you turned on the usb test framework
driver, and some other issues. Here is a simple patch that David Brownell

removing the flashcard from the pcmcia slot also hangs the kernel.
So it seams a flashcard issue (I had issues with this card in the early 2.4.x
kernels, but it would hang the kernel at insertion)

numlock doesn't work.
CPU gets hot (fans start after a minute).

IDE card eject was broken in the new IDE code but should have been
fixed, unless it has come broken again. I'll investigate at some point

The maintainer didn't have a choice :)
That info isn't known to the usb core anymore, only the driver core.
Do a:
ls <driverfs_mount_point>/bus/usb/drivers
to see what USB drivers are registered.

This patch does display the "Synaptics TouchPad", but does not solve the
problem of not finding the clitmouse.

2.5.46 does not show the "Synaptics TouchPad" during boot, which this patch

I just tried 2.5.51, but I still have the same problem, scratch pad works, but
internal wart mouse doesn't.
