Subject: 2.5.44 serial driver bug with asus pr-dls m/b

I can't get the serial port driver to work from with the stock linux
kernel 2.5.44 and an asus pr-dls dual xeon m/b.

It doesn't seem to detect the uart of tts/0 at all, although it finds
tts/1 if I enable it in the bios (there isn't a DB9 for tts/1 on the
rear plate so I can't actually try it)

If I
setserial /dev/tts/0 uart 16550A
which seems happy, it still doesn't work.

dmesg says...(Note this is tts/1 it sees)

Serial: 8250/16550 driver $Revision: 1.90 $ IRQ sharing disabled
tts/%d1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

Bios sends POST text down serial fine, so I know the hardwares OK

PS Ultimate aim is to get serial console stuff working

Any suggestions?

Forgot to mention, it has (according to the manual) an LPC super I/O
controller

Ok, I've recently brought 2.5.45-bk up to date wrt the stuff I've got
here, which includes better debugging for these types of problems.
Can you retry with vanilla 2.5.45 plus the attached patch please?

Also, please make sure you enable DEBUG_AUTOCONF debugging in
drivers/serial/8250.c - the output from the autoconfig should allow
me to track down why tts/0 is failing to be detected.

Previously described behavior is with remote console = ENABLED in the bios.
Changing to remote console = POST ONLY in the bios, (and disabling 2nd
serial port which doesn't have a DB9 anyway) I get

Which looks good to me. And I get some serial console output from the
kernel as it boots, but only upto...

...where the serial output hangs. I presume the serial driver does
something to the hardware which breaks the serial console output. The
kernel does however proceed and boot normally. I'm using the kernel
parameters

Well, it looks like the serial port at 0x3f8 gets unmapped by the bios
when you set remote console=ENABLED. The debug output you've sent all
points towards there being no physical port at 0x3f8.
