What is script is this from? It needs some enhancements to say what went
wrong where.

Make sure you're patching it against 2.4.17 of course, unless you're using
an incremental diff, but then if you were, you should know this.

I answer to the two, all the diffs is in the habit to linked with the
directory Linux not with version "pre" or "rc". I'm not suppose any problem
but I am thinking good notifying it.

If you want a patch against the last "full" kernel,
you need to download that patch, they are available
in v2.4/testing/

You were looking in v2.4/testing/incr/ which has the
incremental patches, don't be surprised you got what
you downloaded ;)
