This sounds similar to an earlier report:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=101224645320919&w=2

Sounds like a USB problem to me. It would be most useful
to know exactly which kernels have the problem and which
ones don't.

I had the same problem as you have when my battery
was near death. Can you try installing a fresh
battery?

disabling both CONFIG_SMP and CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC fixed the
suspend/resume problem. I haven't confirmed whether or not
CONFIG_X86_UP_APIC alone brings back the problem -- will let you know.

the dmi settings are:

DMI 2.3 present.
DMI table at 0x000E0010.

On my thinkpad enabling CONFIG_SMP with or without UP_APIC breaks APM support
at the resume stage. When I did some digging its deadlocking against itself
somehow with the cli/sti calls in the apm resume code path. Remove those and
it works

I didn't have time to get to the bottom of the problem

Hi there.

I've noticed the problem with kernels 2.4.7-10, as
well as 2.4.9-13 and 2.4.17.

As I was not able to fix it, I decided to the mouse
on PS/2

Thx
