There seems to be some problem with VIA IDE IRQ's on 2.4.19-ac2.

With 2.4.19-ac2 i get the following message in the logs:

PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin A of device 00:07.1. Please try using

00:07.1 is the IDE Interface on my mainboard!

checking with lspci gives this output:

whereas with older kernels (2.4.19-ac1 and previous kernels) this error isn't

I've reverted to -ac1 for now, which works fine on my box.

Ok based on Petr's comments about VIA stuff being a bit funny. We can
refine this test later.

There is no guarantee that this will succeed. Quite some PCI IDE
controller chips (f.e. ALi, SiS) may have config register 9 r/o locked
by some other means.

If its locked read only then that is fine. The read back will see the
old value not 0x05 bits set. In which case it'll leave it alone

pci_write_config_byte(dev, PCI_CLASS_PROG, r9|0x05);
pci_read_config_byte(dev, PCI_CLASS_PROG, &r9);

if((r9 & 0x05) == 0x05) /* Reprogrammable */
return 1;

/* Refused */
return 0;

I'm just trying to get this right so we can do a sensible quick fix for
2.4.19. Its relatively easy to add pci_assign_device(dev) functionality
and make the IDE drivers do the right thing when they kick the devices
out of legacy mode. Thats the longer term right answer.

I just tried 2.4.19-ac2.

On booting, when it hits the IDE stuff, I got:

hdc : Lost Interrupt
hdc : Lost Interrupt
hdc : Lost Interrupt
hdc : ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM ....

Then it gets a bit further:

scsi : Aborting command due to timeout : pid 30, scsi2, id 0 lun
0
inquiry 00 00 00 ff 00
(This looks to be my cd burner on hda - ide-scsi)

Then it loops on this continuously. I had to write out the above
by hand,
because it never gets to the point where it mounts my scsi drive
rw.

2.4.19-ac1 seems to work fine. (As well as all the ac series
from the past
4 weeks)

To avoid wrapping I stuck my lspci output and .config at the
following urls:

My .config file is here:
http://ac.marywood.edu/tspin/www/dotconfig.txt

My lspci -vvv is here:
http://ac.marywood.edu/tspin/www/lspci.txt

I am running a stock RedHat 7.3 system.
gcc version 2.96 20000731
modutils 2.4.19
make 3.79.1
binutils 2.11.93.0.2
util-linux 2.11n

If I have done something stupid, let me know.

Thanks!

Tony

Well, with my VIA Crap here I can't confirm this problem. I see
nothing in my logs. I have a VT82Cx86 (is KT133 ?? or something) stuff in
here. But I will try tocompile 2.4.19-ac2 at my office computer where
I have a KT233 VIA chipset.

best regards, Clemens

Why are we kicking IDE devices out of ``legacy'' mode?

Last I checked that was a very sensible mode for IDE devices to operate in.
The IRQ and pio resources are where a lot of software expects them,
and by using an isa-irq there are fewer shared interrupts.

Plus on the few motherboards I tried it on, the pci-irq line didn't
even appear to be hooked up. In these cases I'm thinking of the
on-board IDE controller.

See ac3/ac4. Having tried this approach it turns out to be a very bad
idea indeed. I'm now allowing pci_enable_device with a mask of BARs that
must be assigned. Thats somewhat less invasive
