Subject: woes with 2.6.0-test1 and xscreensaver/xlock

Hi there people,

Is anyone else having trouble with xscreensaver/xlock under 2.6.0-test1?
Whenever I lock my session using either "lock screen" from the menu (it
launches 'xscreensaver lock', afaik) or "xlock", I cant seem to ever get
my session back -- I type in the correct password, but they both just
hang there. The exact same setup works flawlessly in 2.4.21, and just for
the sake of curiosity I also tested 2.5.75, 2.5.74, 2.5.73, 2.5.72,
2.5.71 and 2.5.70, they all exhibit the same behaviour as 2.6.0-test1. I
dont really have time to go on testing kernels to find out exactly where
it broke, so I'm hoping anyone else is experiencing these woes.

Additionally, syslog spews out the following:

Jul 16 17:40:24 hobbes xscreensaver(pam_unix)[1501]: authentication
failure; logname= uid=501 euid=501 tty=:0.0 ruser= rhost= user=nuno

I upgraded to the latest pam and xscreensaver packages from mandrake
cooker, but still no dice, it hangs exactly the same. And oh, this is
glibc 2.3.2, if thats interesting, and gcc 3.3.

Interestingly enough, sometimes killing the xscreensaver process leads to
a complete hang, although no oops is visible. With nmi_watchdog=1 it
doesnt hang, but it seems the keyboard is dead after killing xscreensaver
-- i see an error on console, something like 'xscreensaver: no interrupt
data for mouse/keyb on /proc/interrupt' (i didnt copy it down, sorry).
The keyboard is still useable from the console, but not from X.

Let me know if you need more info.

Regards,

Nuno

Yes, I reported the same problem (and others) on the 31st may and the
5th June.

It's good to see someone has found the gnome-terminal problem. The only
other biggie-ish is the rmmod issue.

Someone reported this on bugzilla too, but i failed to reproduce it so it
appears that perhaps something else died like the keyboard. I tried it
last night on 2.6.0-test1 and i managed to login fine. It does appear that
something else is dying. It'd be good if you could collect the last few messages
from /var/log/XFree86.0.log and /var/log/messages and also perhaps
/var/log/dmesg.

Thanks,
Zwane

It happens to me all the time (so I stopped using xscreensaver).

Alan says that it's fixed in RH 9 IIRC, but no details about the
problem or the fix.... ? Sounds a little like a userspace (library
or syscall) issue. Someone mentioned PAM also.

Aha! The machine i tested it on was RH9, i'll have to try this on 7.3 (w/o
updates) but yes, it sounds like a userspace problem.

I suspect it's the same bug that wedged PAM when the "child runs first"
patch made its appearance:

* Mon Apr 23 2001 Nalin Dahyabhai <[email protected]>

- merge up to 0.75
- pam_unix: temporarily ignore SIGCHLD while running the helper
- pam_pwdb: temporarily ignore SIGCHLD while running the helper
- pam_dispatch: default to uncached behavior if the cached chain is empty

Yes, RH 9 ships with a version of xscreensaver (and whatever
infrastructure) which works with both 2.4 and 2.5/2.6 kernels.

I reported the same xscreensaver problem on 2.5 kernels, but found that
it was automagically solved when I installed RH 9 -

Hope this helps,

Joe

Hi Zwane, thanks for the reply.

Ok, I just reproduced it. The last lines in /v/l/messages just after
entering the password in xscreensaver are:

Jul 16 20:27:11 hobbes xscreensaver(pam_unix)[1503]: authentication
failure; logname= uid=501 euid=501 tty=:0.0 ruser= rhost= user=root
Jul 16 20:28:52 hobbes modprobe: FATAL: Module /dev/apm_bios not found.
Jul 16 20:28:58 hobbes modprobe: FATAL: Module /dev/pts0 not found.

in /v/l/syslog:

Jul 16 20:01:00 hobbes CROND[2575]: (root) CMD (nice -n 19 run-parts /
etc/cron.hourly)
Jul 16 20:26:46 hobbes modprobe: FATAL: Module /dev/apm_bios not found.
Jul 16 20:28:52 hobbes modprobe: FATAL: Module /dev/apm_bios not found.
Jul 16 20:28:58 hobbes modprobe: FATAL: Module /dev/pts0 not found.

and the last lines in /v/l/XFree86.log are:

GetModeLine - scrn: 0 clock: 94500
GetModeLine - hdsp: 1024 hbeg: 1072 hend: 1168 httl: 1376
vdsp: 768 vbeg: 769 vend: 772 vttl: 808 flags: 5
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)

The apm bit is funny. I certainly dont have any apm stuff in the kernel.
This is a regular desktop machine, an amd xp 3200/asus a7v8x board.

Also, i'm attaching a strace log of the xscreensaver process -- i hung it
entering the password, switched to the console, strace'd it and killed it
while being traced. I hope it can be useful. The log is slightly edited
tho, to remove my password.

Ah, one more thing. After killing the xscreensaver process and returning
to X, the keyboard wont work with some apps -- I can type just fine on
aterm, for example, but not on balsa or xchat, as all the keypresses on
those two programs will appear on aterm.

Let me know if you need more info, .config, etc.

Regards,

Nuno

Replying to myself:

Ok, I figured it out. It's a definitely a pam problem. I fetched latest
pam rpm from RH RawHide and picked up their sigchld patch, applied it to
mandrake cookers's latest pam package, rebuilt, et voila'. All is well
again, it doesnt hang anymore. I think the bug in bugzilla can be closed
now. I'm attaching the patch to pam 0.77, if anyone wants to give it a
spin. Also, should anyone from mandrake is reading this, it'd be
adviseable to apply it to the official package. I'll ping them anyway, to
let them know of this.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Regards,
Nuno
