. Lots of bugfixes.
. A big one-liner from Mark Haverkamp fixes some hanges which were being
seen with the aacraid driver and may fix the problem which people have seen
on other SCSI drivers: everything getting stuck in io_schedule() under load.
. Another interactivity patch from Con. Feedback is needed on this
please - we cannot make much progress on this fairly subjective work
without lots of people telling us how it is working for them.

Oh, all right, I forgot to set aside the requisite eighteen hours to build
the kernel with gcc-3.x. Sorry bout that.
Just ignore them, or revert wpadded.patch.

This patch seems to mostly cure an oddity I've been seeing since
2.5.7x, or maybe very late 2.5.6x (I forget exactly when) where
running 'ps aux' or 'ls -l' in an xterm (and only xterm it seems; I've
tried rxvt and aterm) would more often than not result in a wallclock
run time of up to two seconds, instead of the usual tenth of a second
or so, with system and user time remaining constant. If I keep
running 'ps aux' its output does start to become slow again, snapping
back to full speed after a few more runs. Kind of an odd one.

there was a similar bug in the gnome terminal code, it was a userspace X
window-refresh/event-qeueing bug/race that was sensitive to scheduler
timings. So it can go away and come back based on precise timings. Eg. it
was more likely to happen with antialiasing turned on than off.

In fact I've seen a number of apps display this problem. Basically how I
understood it was the child was spawned with a lower dynamic priority (50% of
the bonus of the parent with the child penalty at 50%). The parent then was
spinning madly waiting for the child but in the process it was continually
preempting the child. Eventually the parent was seen as a cpu hog, it's
dynamic priority dropped and the child finally got to run along side it. The
next time you ran the same parent/child combination the problem had gone
because the parent was at a lower dynamic priority. Changing child penalty
back up to 95% cures this problem (but can bring other problems with it
unless workarounds are added). While this seems more an anomaly in the coding
of the application brought out by the scheduler, it seems to be very common.

It always happened to me when I run "make menuconfig" under gnome-terminal on
redhat 9 with 2.5.73. Is it because of busy-waiting on a variable shared
amongst multiple processes/threads? If so, it smells of a bug in the application,
busy-waiting is _BAD_.

Well you would appear to be the first person who has tested a -mm kernel on
ppc since mid-April or earlier.
As soon as Viro returns, that code hits Linus's tree. Oh well, can't say
they weren't warned.

Hello Andrew,
testing 2.6.0-test1-mm1 right now. Everything's been _really_ good so far.
I've been using 2.5.72-mm1 before since it's out without a problem.
make -j 16 bzImage + xmms + moving a term window like mad never makes Xmms skip
which is really good. Term window freezes for few seconds after moving it like mad for ~7/8 sec
(not a realy day to day typical workload ! :) And it comes back to normal almost as soon as i stop
moving the Eterm window.
I also have a Xinerama setup and no pb so far when moving like mad the Eterm windows from one
screen to the other or moving Eterm like mad wile overlapping the 2 screens.
Box is Dell WS 530 MT SMP 512 Mo , 15K RPM SCSI disk (AIC7xxx, 0 TCQ), Nvidia GeForce 256 AGP NV10DDR +
Nvidia NV6 Vanta LT PCI
boot option is : kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.5.72-mm1 root=/dev/sda2 console=tty1 console=ttyS1,9600n8 elevator=as noirqbalance
Box is running postfix, Mozilla, Opera, NFS server, gnomeICU, etc.. and all is running fine ( subjective
opinion ;)
Congrats to all kernel hackers :)
Thanks,

Ouch. Well, it is good that scheduler changes made the bug visible,
so it can be fixed. Certainly no reason to
work around it in the kernel, the effort is better spent on fixing
the bug. Distributors can make sure they have fixed their apps
before distributing 2.6.

Preprocessed output for arch/ppc/kernel/irq.c includes this:
cpumask_t irq_affinity [256 ] =
{ [0 ... 256 -1] = ({ cpumask_t __tmp__; (( __tmp__
).mask[0]) = 1 ; __tmp__; }) };
AFAICT it's starting from this:
cpumask_t irq_affinity [NR_IRQS] =
{ [0 ... NR_IRQS-1] = DEFAULT_CPU_AFFINITY };
and NR_IRQS-1 is becoming 256, DEFAULT_CPU_AFFINITY is becoming
cpumask_of_cpu(0). Then cpumask_of_cpu(0) is getting transformed some
more (I haven't quite figured out what's going on there).
Does this help at all?

Oh, well that won't fly; it effectively isn't a constant initializer.
I'll see what can be rammed past gcc. We're shooting for something
with array element 0 equal to 0x1UL and all others 0.

I filled an entry on redhat's bugzilla, but the response was
"keep the terminal minimised while doing heavy terminal output".
I quit redhat next day.
I could translate this to "Look mom, I can config my kernel while blindfolded!!!" ;)
I wonder if someone has produced an small test-case for this,
which works on 2.4 and dies in 2.5 or 2.6... it would then
be "easy" to check and fix the apps.
Greets, Antonio.

In fact, this is all you need to know to be
a Caveman Database Programmer:
A relational database is a big spreadsheet
that several people can update simultaneously.

BTW, following my e-mail signature in this message is my .config. I
guess the most notable setting is that CONFIG_SMP is disabled (i.e.,
it's a UP compile).

Hmm. Well, ditching the strong typechecking would "fix" it, though
that's really only papering over it.
Okay, enough jabbering for me...

It doesn't _have_ to be initialised at compile time. Just stick a
little loop in init_IRQ()?

Well, my desktop experience with this is good. But the music playing
problems (aka mp3/ogg playing problems) still there. Its better, and I
feel the problems are near to be solved, but the player still jumps..
The mouse in 2.6.0-test1 vanilla is smoother than -mm1

How fast is your processor?

Hi there.
I'm having some trouble compiling -mm1
It looks like it's from the ACPI update.
More info available upon request.

Okay, tell me about the ACPI update... also if you could send a config
that would help too.

Well, there is one in test1-mm1, and I saw references to it in the errors at
the end of the compile (really, this is the very begining so there isn't
much difference) :-/
And Con's 06int is patched on here, but I don't think it's causing the
problem.

My system:
k6-2 450MHz
256 MB SDRAM pc100
ide udma33
aty rage fury pro 64 MB
running Xfree86 4.3 + gnome2.2 all the time :)
This problems with mp3/ogg playing is not reproducible with 2.4.x and
2.2 series, only have it with 2.5.x and 2.6.0-test1

Your system looks fine, but slower boxes seem to be suffering a bit more,
i get somewhat bad skipping on most my boxes which are in the 400-600MHz
range although all of them have > 512MB of RAM and at least UDMA33

I have been testing 2.5.75-mm1. I was able to cause video skip in xine,
but not audio. I will repeat the tests using test1-mm1. Anyone else
seen the video-only type skip? It appears to be caused by other GUI
operations, not so much by CPU load. Just dragging windows is not enough,
it needs to be more intensive than that.
More results later with test1-mm1
Thanks for all the great stuff!!

I have been testing interactivity now for for a while. The only
symptom (subjective) that I can see is occasional but repeatable
(if you get what I mean) video _only_ skips in xine. The audio
does not skip. The video skips are very short, only a 4-5 frames
at most.
They occur _only_ when performing such operations as rendering a
large bitmap to the screen. They do _not_ occur when dragging
windows (with contents visible during drag,) nor does CPU load
seem to have an effect.
Playing games with nice/renice on xine or on other processes,
especially GIMP etc., does not seem to have an effect.
>From this it seems to my limited view that the remaining skips
might be XFree86 issues?
Some pertinent details:
2 x P4 Xeon 2.4 Mhz, 512Mb ram.
Radeon VQ + Matrox Mystique.
Premptive kernel
Hyperthreading enabled.
IDE DVD, no SCSI in system.
No problems at all, only minor niggles since 2.5.67. (I have
been following -mm patches.)
Thanks for the wonderful work!
