2.6.1-mm5 didn't get very far, only about a page of bootup messages.
The last two were:
NET registered protocol family 1
NET registered protocol family 10
And then nothing. I tried twice - sysrq+B worked the first
time, not the second. There were no oops or other messages.
I used the new mregparm=3 option - it works for 2.6.1-mm4

Any reason you keep CardServices-compatibility-layer.patch around?
Having a compat layer for old driver around just for some architectures,
thus having drivers that only compile on some for no deeper reasons sounds
like an incredibly bad idea. Especially when that API is not used by any
intree driver and only in -mm ;)
(ghash.patch)
Please don't readd include/linux/ghash.h - it was removed because it's
utter crap. Better switch UML to use some sane hashing.
Damn, I really hoped that beast would be dead.

I got the following compile error:

CC drivers/ide/ide-pnp.o

`drivers/ide/pdc4030.o'. Stop.

Hi Andrew,
When compiling 2.6.1-mm5 i get these errors:
CC drivers/net/net_init.o
In file included from drivers/net/net_init.c:53:
include/net/neighbour.h:216: parse error before `proc_handler'
include/net/neighbour.h:216: warning: function declaration isn't a prototype
make[2]: *** [drivers/net/net_init.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [drivers/net] Error 2
make: *** [drivers] Error 2
From what I'm able to see, nothing is wrong with the function declaration,
so I really cannot guess why this error show up. Then again, I'm no
programmer/developer, so someone else ought to take a look at this to
see what's causing these problems. This error is new in 2.6.1-mm5.
2.6.1-mm4 compiles cleanly and works beautifully.
I'd be happy to test any patches to help fixing the error.
Tim Cambrant
The patch for better i386 CPU selection still impacts the allnoconfig
build.
In this case, there is no default CPU. Kconfig patches should be tested
against defconfig, allnoconfig, allyesconfig, and allmodconfig.

err, it's my way of reminding myself that the issue isn't fully resolved.
Smarter people would use a pencil and a notebook or something.

Yes, we were concerned about avoiding breaking the various random
out-of-tree pcmcia drivers which people use. Russell would prefer that if
we _do_ have a compat layer it should be implemented in a different manner.
But we're all fairly uncertain that the compat layer is needed - converting
a driver is a pretty simple exercise, and Davd Hinds doesn't intend to
maintain his drivers into 2.6.
So the compatibility layer will probably go away soon, unless something
happens to bring it back into consideration.

What do these patches do?

Yes!
I tested this against 2.6.1-bk2 on my knfsd server since friday, and it has
fixed my problems with stale nfs handles. Without the patch, it wouldn't
last a whole day before the errors started cropping up.

Trivial stuff.

Use a local variable rather than reevaluating EXT2_SB() all over the place.
> > -ext2-s_next_generation-fix.patch

Initialisation and locking fixes for EXTx_SB()->s_next_generation.

Correctly handle ext3's `chattr +j'
I'm having a couple of minor issues with ACPI in the -mm series.
The battery status on my Dell Latitude D800 won't work at all without
the patch from http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1766 however,
with vanilla 2.6.1 everything seems to work fine. Without this patch I
get tons of _ut_allocate: tried to allocate zero bytes (or something
close to this) and no battery status at all.
With the patch mentioned above everything seemed to work OK, however,
recently I enabled both 4GB highmem support (this seems to get me an
extra 128MB on my 1GB system) and preempt support and now, while it
initially works fine, the system eventually quits reporting battery
status and I get a lot of messages like the following every time I poll
for battery status (over and over if a battery status applet is loaded):
ACPI-0279: *** Error: Looking up [BST0] in namespace,
AE_ALREADY_EXISTS
ACPI-1120: *** Error: Method execution failed [\_SB_.BAT0._BST]
(Node f7feea60), AE_ALREADY_EXISTS
It seems that I can trigger this much quicker if a generate a lot of
traffic on my aironet wireless adapter, it will only take minutes to
occur. I'm going to try to back out preempt and 4GB support one at a
time and see what happens.
I haven't been able to reproduce any of these issues on 2.6.1 vanilla.
Later,
Tom

I'm testing all my patches with both a complete non-modular and a
completely modular .config [1], and additionally I mix these testings
with using CONFIG_SMP=n and/or using gcc 2.95 which often find even more
problems.
Regarding defconfig:
Although several options were added and/or changed, there was not a
single update to the i386 defconfig since August last year.
Below is a patch that updates defconfig for 2.6.1-mm5.
Regarding allnoconfig:
allnoconfig is a completely pathological case. It says "n" to support
for ISA, MCA and PCI, and neither networking nor any block devices.
Besides, it says "n" to ELF, a.out and other binary formats.
Demanding that allnoconfig should compile (although the resulting kernel
is completely useless) sounds a bit like demanding that no change in the
kernel is allowed to cause regressions in the dbench results...
It is useful to omit a common option like e.g. PCI and check whether the
kernel still compiles, but allnoconfig removes nearly everything and
compiles such a small part of the kernel, that it's hardly useful.

Thanks for the patch. I realize that defconfig is just ONE
configuration that can be built, but it has been used for a couple years
in automated build regressions. And, it actually boots on a number of
desktop computers!

I realize that allnoconfig is pathological, but it has caught several
config errors. One would never try to boot from such a config. Builds
based on allnoconfig have one purpose and that purpose is to validate
that defines are not used in cases where they are NOT defined in the
configuration. Developers will quite often code a feature or
architecture with the config parameters always ON. When the config
option is turned OFF, I will find compile errors, undefined variables,
and the like. This is actually quite a valuable screen.
If developers feel that this has outlived its usefulness, I'll remove it
from the compile regressions. However, all I have received at this
point have been requests to put an allnoconfig build into the
regressions.

The problem is that allnoconfig turns _everything_ off.
Cases like e.g. CONFIG_PROC_FS=n are interesting, but allnoconfig
doesn't really test them since allnoconfig also says "n" to all drivers.

I'd like to hear from the people requesting it why they consider it
useful.
In my personal experience, compiling allyesconfig but with CONFIG_SMP=n
(which enables BROKEN_ON_SMP drivers), and compiling with gcc 2.95 are
more interesing (and more realistic) configurations than allnoconfig
that find many compile errors.

I admit that when I added allnoconfig to the compile regressions, there
were several bugs that were exposed and fixed. Since then, the
allnoconfig builds have been pretty quiet (until the i386 CPU change).
If it is not interesting anymore, we should remove the allnoconfig build
option completely, since it imposes some work on anyone that modifies
Kconfig files. I'd like to hear from anyone that wants to retain
allnoconfig as well. I'd be glad to remove allnoconfig if that is the
consensus.

Yo,
As usual, I've upgraded to the latest -mm, but to my dismay, my
temperature sensors are no longer reporting sane values. For example,
my motherboard usually reports about 31C, but now never moves up or down
from 210C. My CPU, likewise, hovers at 210C, but sometimes moves up or
down in what appears to be units of 11.
I'm positive in the correctness of my /sys value parsing (latest gkrellm
drop with lm_sensors values stuck in), so that's a non-issue. The
modules I'm using are i2c_viapro and w83781d, and of course their
dependencies. My logs report no errors from the kernel, or any user
space apps/libs of relevance.
If necessary, I can post my .config and anything else applicable.
Later,
Zack

Please make sure you have the latest version of lmsensors. A few things
have changed in the latest i2c driver code that makes this necessary (we
don't initialize chips from the kernel anymore, which might be what you
are seeing.)
If that still doesn't work, please post this to the sensors mailing list
(address is in the MAINTAINERS file.)
thanks,
