initialize the sound card. This worked fine in kernel 2.6.12.5. The
sound card has not been configured in kernels >2.6.13.

Above looks like syslog snippet, and not dmesg. I would suggest
including the actual output of the 'dmesg' command, as it very possibly
will reveal missing symbols or some other issue.

I have seen similar problems due to trailing spaces on option lines in
/etc/modprobe.com. These get interpreted by the kernel as zero-length
options, causing similar "unknown parameter" errors. So check that
file, and remove any suspicious spaces at the ends of lines.

Run "lsmod | grep ^snd | cut -d\ -f1 | xargs rmmod" then modprobe
snd_es18xx from the command line, then send the output of dmesg if it
does not work.

This usually means your ALSA modules were not compiled against the right
kernel version. Or some of the old modules failed to unload and you're
now trying to load a mix of old and new modules.
