Subject: 2.6.16-rc6-rt3

i have released the 2.6.16-rc6-rt3 tree, which can be downloaded from
the usual place:

http://redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/

this is a fixes-only release, which resolves a number of 2.6.16-rc6
rebasing side-effects. The fixes are:

- futex crash fix (reported by Michal Piotrowski)

- PI boosting fix (Esben Nielsen)

- printk from rt-atomic context fix (Thomas Gleixner, reported by
Michal Piotrowski)

- symbol export fixes (Jan Altenberg)

- non-debug mutex build fix (Jan Altenberg)

- x86_64 and ppc build fix (Steven Rostedt)

- early_printk build fix in latency.c (Steven Rostedt)

to build a 2.6.16-rc6-rt3 tree, the following patches should be applied:

http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.15.tar.bz2
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/patch-2.6.16-rc6.bz2

Hmm, you didn't do a make modules_install, then change some of the
config options, do a make install and forget to do a modules_install did
you? That error looks like the error I get when I do something like
that.

If you have done more than one make and install, could you do a make
clean and start again? Just to make sure it's not a incompatibility
between makes.

Thanks,

hm, this seems to suggest some module building mismatch. Could you
double-check that by doing a full rebuild?

Not likely, but...

I am trying a clean build because I too have had similar problems in the
past and I have been using this tree for a while.

As noted in my response to Steve, I am doing just that.

I'm seeing a system hang on boot with the -rc6-rt3 tree. The test system
is an Athlon64 3000+ uniprocessor with 512MB RAM.

Just after the I/O schedulers are registered the system hangs:

<...>
Installing knfsd (copyright (C) 1996 [email protected]).
Initializing Cryptographic API
io scheduler noop registered
io scheduler anticipatory registered (default)
io scheduler deadline registered
io scheduler cfq registered
<system hangs>

The .config for the kernel build and the full serial console output are
attached.

i have released the 2.6.16-rc6-rt4 tree, which can be downloaded from
the usual place:

http://redhat.com/~mingo/realtime-preempt/

this too is a fixes-only release. Changes since -rt3:

- PI boosting fixes (Thomas Gleixner, found by Esben Nielsen)

- task-exit latency breaker for !PREEMPT_RT preemption modes
(Hugh Dickins, reported by Lee Revell)

- SLAB fixes (based on Karsten Wiese's patch)

the SLAB fix might solve the USB problems reported by many.

to build a 2.6.16-rc6-rt4 tree, the following patches should be applied:

http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.15.tar.bz2
http://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/patch-2.6.16-rc6.bz2

that's expected: t2-l2-2rd-deadlock.tst provokes a real deadlock, that
the kernel should report.

but we do not seem to recover from the crash gracefully:

we should handle this better.

Sbastien Dugu found a bug that might explain your crash: during the
2.6.16 rebase we lost a section marker which missing marker placed
assembly code into the ksymtabs table. That could cause confusion in the
ksymtab parser.

I've released 2.6.16-rc6-rt9 with this fix - could you check whether the
crash you are seeing is fixed?

hm, cannot reproduce that build problem here, with your config and with:

gcc version 4.0.2 20051125 (Red Hat 4.0.2-8)

It looks like a gcc 4.1.0 regression.
gcc 4.0.3 (Debian 4.0.3-1) works good.

Can you check it on gcc 4.1 from Fedora?

Michal

seems to be a different one:

could you increase PERCPU_ENOUGH_ROOM in include/linux/percpu.h? (to
e.g. 65536)

It is already set to that:
#define PERCPU_ENOUGH_ROOM 65536

Perhaps I misunderstood what you wanted me to do before. Just for grins
I doubled the PERCPU_ENOUGH_ROOM to 131072 and have successfully booted
twice now.
