Subject: [RESEND PATCH v10 00/11] Add support for FDMA DMA controller and slim core rproc found on STi chipsets

Hi Vinod and Bjorn,

This patchset adds support for the Flexible Direct Memory Access (FDMA) core
found on STi chipsets from STMicroelectronics. The FDMA is a slim core CPU
with a dedicated firmware. It is a general purpose DMA controller supporting
16 independent channels and data can be moved from memory to memory or between
memory and paced latency critical real time targets.

V10 series updates remoteproc kconfig subsystem to use 'depends on' rather
than select for the remoteproc core. Remoteproc client drivers now need to
'depends on' for the core part.

This avoids the Kconfig recursive dependency errors and reliance on the DRM
patch included with the v9 series. Patches are also included for enabling the
remoteproc core in the multi_v7 defconfig. All patches for DRM subsystem have
been removed.

Note there is no longer a depedency with the DRM_VIRTIO_GPU driver in this series,
only remoteproc and dmaengine subsystems.

Subject: [PATCH v10 01/11] remoteproc: st_slim_rproc: add a slimcore rproc driver

slim core is used as a basis for many IPs in the STi
chipsets such as fdma and demux. To avoid duplicating
the elf loading code in each device driver a slim
rproc driver has been created.

This driver is designed to be used by other device drivers
such as fdma, or demux whose IP is based around a slim core.
The device driver can call slim_rproc_alloc() to allocate
a slim rproc and slim_rproc_put() when finished.

This driver takes care of ioremapping the slim
registers (dmem, imem, slimcore, peripherals), whose offsets
and sizes can change between IP's. It also obtains and enables
any clocks used by the device. This approach avoids having
a double mapping of the registers as slim_rproc does not register
its own platform device. It also maps well to device tree
abstraction as it allows us to have one dt node for the whole
device.

All of the generic rproc elf loading code can be reused, and
we provide start() stop() hooks to start and stop the slim
core once the firmware has been loaded. This has been tested
successfully with fdma driver.

Subject: [PATCH v10 03/11] remoteproc: Update Kconfig setup to 'depends on REMOTEPROC'

Make REMOTEPROC core a selectable kconfig option, and update
remoteproc client drivers to 'depends on' the core. This avoids
some nasty Kconfig recursive dependency issues. Also when using
menuconfig client drivers will be hidden until the core has been
enabled.

Documentation/kbuild/kconfig-language.txt:

Note:
select should be used with care. select will force
a symbol to a value without visiting the dependencies.
By abusing select you are able to select a symbol FOO even
if FOO depends on BAR that is not set.
In general use select only for non-visible symbols
(no prompts anywhere) and for symbols with no dependencies.
That will limit the usefulness but on the other hand avoid
the illegal configurations all over.

Subject: [PATCH v10 06/11] dmaengine: st_fdma: Add STMicroelectronics FDMA engine driver support

This patch adds support for the Flexible Direct Memory Access (FDMA) core
driver. The FDMA is a slim core CPU with a dedicated firmware.
It is a general purpose DMA controller capable of supporting 16
independent DMA channels. Data moves maybe from memory to memory
or between memory and paced latency critical real time targets and it
is found on al STi based chipsets.

As you now make changes to the entire remoteproc Kconfig file, rather
than simply add a Kconfig symbol we can't bring this in via Vinod's tree
without providing Linus with a messy merge conflict.

As of v4.9 you need to rproc_free() rather than rproc_put() to undo

OK, I think the best approach is for Vinod to create an immutable
branch with the entire fdma series on, and then both of you merge that branch into
your respective trees.

That way there won't be any conflicts and you can both accept further changes
for v4.9 release. Trying to take half the series via rproc, and half via dma trees won't work
because they have dependencies on each other.

I will send a v11 series in a moment which includes the feedback in this email
and also include the additional fixes which Vinod has applied since the driver
has been in linux-next.

merged code! This is how kernel developement is done...

When the feedback is "there is an unrelated change in this patch", the only way
you can fix that is by having a new version of the patch.

You have dropped the remoteproc parts which were updated in v11, so
it is no longer merged. Bjorn can now pick the v11 versions if he chooses which
incporporates his feedback.

Hi Vinod,

It looks like you reverted the wrong Kconfig fix, the one I objected to
was the change in drivers/remoteproc, not the one in drivers/dma.

The ST_FMDA depends on functions exposed by REMOTEPROC and
ST_SLIM_REMOTEPROC, the latter in turn depends on REMOTEPROC, which you
guys made user selectable - and as such should not be selected - but I
think we should move forward and get everything merged and then we can
go back and figure out how this should be addressed (or left alone?).

I have merged "topic/st_fdma" into rproc-next, so that I can fix up the
now broken drivers/remoteproc/Kconfig.

We do however both need to revert the revert or there will be link
errors if you build the dma driver with remoteproc=n. If you do this I
can merge the topic once more and we'll keep the set of changes in sync.
