I just did a quick glance at the code, and realised I goofed, and
AMD & Centaur CPUs won't get to the mcheck_init call.
Unrelated to this incident, but a problem all the same.

trashing a register that it shouldn't. Work-around: Don't disable the
serial number until the code is fixed.

Just one little question:
Why do ext2 and ext3 not support mount options uid and gid as all the
other filesystems do?

because they have uid and gid within the filesystem itself for directories,
files, pipes, etc stored in the inodes of the fs. Same with any other posix
filesystem (which vfat, iso9660(not counting rockridge), hfs, etc are *not*).

The reason why I ask is, I have two linux stations and I want to use ext2
for the floppy disks to save space for fat vfat and so on. Now it would
be nice to automatically mount my floppies with group "floppy", so that
all the users, belonging to group "floppy", can read/write from/to disk.

Please read your mount and fstab man pages. Look for the "user" option.
BTW, these uid/gid options would not help you any further, as has been
said, because mount is always a privileged operation.

You will find that:
a) FAT uses less space than ext2 on a floppy for the same amount of files
b) you don't need to mount a FAT floppy if you don't want (you can use
mcopy/mdir/etc for quick operations)
c) you can read a FAT floppy from a Windows machine if needed
