Subject: Compile Bogons in 2.4.19-rc3 with Caldera OpenLinux 3.1's patched 2.95.2

I compile with
mv .config ..
make mrproper
mv ../.config .
make oldconfig
make dep clean bzImage modules > /dev/null ( to make me see the erors, since
allowing 'em to be hidden amongst the seas of warnings don't clue me in. . . )
and possibly the "make clean" portion of that isn't recommended anymore ( but
I didn't ever see any recommendation to /not/ use it for any raisin. . . )

I've got 2.4.18 in /usr/src/linux ( symlink to linux-2.4.19 ), patched.

The "*" marked lines are the ones that showed up on stderr, the following lines
show the context from a re-everything of the kernel ( using the finally-learned-
-about trick of "&> ../compile.log" ), so youse can figure out what and where it's
going on.

I'll not be using Caldera much longer, so it'll be either SuSE 8 or Gentoo or LFS
for me ( e-mail me if their compilers are known to be broken, I'd rather know up-
front and grab the stock one, no that won't work, according to LFS 2.95.3 needs
2 minor patches hmmm )

PS, if you want more context for one or another of these ( or what I'm getting
included/set in my config ), just e-mail me & ask, please.

it already /is/ such a symlink. The /usr/include/asm, though...
Oh, fucking great, /usr/include/asm /isn't/ a symlink to
/usr/src/linux/include/asm, it's its own directory.

( can we say self-inconsistency? )

Interestingly, NONE of these ( listed ) files exist in either location
( one being the stock-kernel-sources and the other being Caldera's ( though
possibly I scrambled something over the past year ) /usr/include/asm
?DIRECTORY ( rather than symlink ) ).

Perhaps if it works-for-you then you've got the files in your
/usr/include/asm directory since they aren't in the stock kernel?

the closest match in /usr/src/linux/include/asm-i386 is
timex.h

That's 100% correct. /usr/include/asm and /usr/include/linux are supposed
to be the kernel headers glibc was compiled with, not the kernel headers
for the kernel you're trying to build.

Oh, I didn't know that. . .
How's it supposed to know which version to include if there are 2 versions.
. . hmmm . . . probably by specifying somesort of include-path that puts 'em
in order-of-preference, then.

Thanks for setting me straight: stress is a bad caffeine-substitute, eh?
( actually, caffeine is an effective stress-substitute, methinks )

When building a kernel, paths specified with the gcc -I flag are searched
first, then the default include directory paths.

In later kernels, gcc is told not to use the default include directory
paths to stop it looking there and picking up an old header file.

You better do not combine clean targets with build targets. If you
someday will try the command on a multi-processor machine, and being
excited about all its power, place something like '-j2' in the line,
heaven knows what you'll get.

'-s' is for 'silent' builds, and turns off displaying of the executed
commands (not for version generation, though, very incovenient problem
in the kbuild-2.4).

I don't think that this is the whole story.

Some applications talk to the kernel (eg via ioctl()). This is related to the
kernel version that is running (not anything to do with the libs).

In reality, we need three sets of headers:
1. Things that are kernel independent, and depend on the glibc functionality
This is probably /usr/include
2. Things that are related to the kernel that the libs are compiled against
This is probably /usr/include/sys
3. Things that are related to the kernel that is running.
This is probably /usr/include/linux

The hard part is that the applications need to be matched to the kernel
binary API, which is essentially an impossible problem unless you have
a source tree that you recompile whenever you change the kernel
API (and an API versioning system that tells you which version you
need for each application).

And ioctl() is an evil interface, and anything which changes in an
already defined ioctl is an ABI change, which aren't allowed in stable
kernel series.

No. Search the lkml archives. You'll find several people, including
Linus telling people otherwise.

ioctl() is a damn evil interface that we are stuck with.
Changing an already defined ioctl isn't a sufficient condition.
If you have a program that is testing for a certain kernel
capability (ioctl, socket, whatever), and it is present in the
headers, then it needs to be present in the kernel that the
program will run under. So you can't add anything to the
ABI (as described by the headers) in a stable series either.

I didn't express it well. My point is that the include files should be
refactored to provide only the kernel ABI in /usr/include/linux.
If it isn't part of the kernel ABI, then it isn't strictly part of Linux,
and the naming should support that.

Then /usr/include/linux (or linux-abi, whatever) really _should_ be
a symlink to the currently running kernel headers describing the
ABI.

But certainly not the way it is now, where symlinking /usr/include/linux
to /usr/src/kernels/linux-2.x.y.z-rcA/include is the path to madness.
