Subject: 2.5.29 / 2.5.31 floppy/apm support

Hello guys!

Just a small question, perhaps it's dump, but I am having big problems
currently:

I want to setup a router-only host, which boots from two floppy drives
and has 3 network devices.

So far no problem, but when trying to access the ramdisk on the floppy,
the old problem exists that the floppy driver does not work with current
VFS.

Then I tried to shutdown the host via network, which fails because of apm
module cannot be included in kernel in 2.5.29.

So I just wanted to ask, whether someone is working on the floppy and apm
problem or if it is / will be solved in 2.5.31 ?

Nico

/* a bit frustrated, because the wifi card only works correct in 2.5 series,
which let 2.5 the only choice.
Perhaps I am gonna use 2.5.24, which was pretty stable and still had apm and
floppy support...
*/

Well, have you tried built-in apm module yet?

yes, doesn't work either.
I am currently trying to find a kernel, which supports wifi, floppy, apm.
As you can see in my header I downgraded to 2.5.24 right now, but floppy
is broken herein, too.
Now I am trying 2.5.20, perhaps this works ...

I am still hoping that in 2.5.31/32 floppy and apm will work again.

Well, you won't find any. The days when the floppy driver still worked we
didn't have wifi, I think. Someone just has to adopt floppy to the new vfs
api, and we'll be happy. However, most of us are into different things,
and some of us don't even have a floppy.

unlikely(eGiven someone cares)...

For 100% working floppy you'd need to downgrade to 2.5.12 or earlier.

Floppy working soon? Only if a miracle happens.

I'd recommend that you backport this "wifi" thing (whatever it is)
to 2.4.19 and run that instead of 2.5.

tried 2.5.10...which fails, too.

At least we only had old wi-fi extensions [btw, wi-fi == wireless networks].
I currently tried to run it with 2.4.18 and it works mostly, only when trying
to boot on the other P133 system [as described in my other mail], the system
only hangs.

Most of my computers even have 2 floppies [my old boss gave them out for
free and I thought copying directly would be fast...which is just false!
Copying directly with one FDC is about 20 times slower! Possibly a problem
with out floppy driver ?]

seems like lkml consists of more people using apples without FDC :(

My wild guess would be 2.5.1-pre1 or 2.5.0 itself. I know my atapi cdrom
drive broke in 2.5.1-pre1 and never worked since (admittedly I haven't
tried in a very long while now).

Cheers,

Anton
