Trying to be a bit more timely about releases, especially since some
people couldn't use 2.5.37 due to the X lockup that should hopefully
be fixed (no idea _why_ that old bug only started to matter recently, the
bug itself was several months old).
ia64 updates, a vm86 mode bug that bit XFree86 startup (and must have
bitten dosemu too, but maybe people aren't using DOS much any more), PCI
driver attach fixes, JFS, ACPI, net drivers etc.

Summary of changes from v2.5.37 to v2.5.38
============================================
David Mosberger <[email protected]>:
o ia64: Minor cleanups
o ia64: First draft of perfmon sampling-interval randomization
support
o ia64: Make sure register-backing store gets mapped with the right
PTE protection bits
o ia64: Fix return path of signal delivery for sigaltstack() case
o ia64: Fix narrow window during which signal could be delivered with
only the memory stack switched over to the alternate signal stack.
o Fix edge-triggered IRQ handling. See Linus's cset 1.611 for
details
o ia64: Fix comment in arch/ia64/kernel/signal.c
o ia64: Fix x86 struct ipc_kludge (reported by R Sreelatha, fix
proposed by Dave Miller).
o ia64: Preserve f11-f15 around calls into firmware. Patch by John
Marvin
o ia64: Dont execute srlz.d needlessly (reported by Chris Ruemmler)
o ia64: Fix typo in perfmon.c. (Patch by Stephane Eranian.)
o ia64: Sync up with 2.5.35+. Add ia64-specific huge page support
(by Rohit Seth)
o ia64: Make include/asm-ia64/suspend.h non-empty (suggested by Keith
Owens)
o ia64: Add arch/ia64/mm/hugetlbpage.c by Rohit Seth
o ia64: A few huge page fixes (patch by Rohit Seth)
o ia64: Fix zx1-platform support
o ia64: Sync with 2.5.37
o ia64: Reorganize initialization sequence a bit
o ia64: Switch over to using ACPI PCI support routines. This gets
rid of much of the code-duplication that existed between ACPI and
the ia64 IOSAPIC code.
<[email protected]>:
o Add support for get-MII-data ioctls in 8139cp net driver
<[email protected]>:
o Optimize __ia64_save_fpu() and __ia64_load_fpu() for Itanium 2
<[email protected]>:
o free_area_init_node fix (for non discontigmem direct use)
Alexander Viro <[email protected]>:
o gendisk for pcd, cdu31a, cm206, mcd, mcdx, sbpcd, jsflash, mtdblock_ro,
pf, swim3, loop, aztcd, gscd, optcd, sjcd, sonycd, stram, rd, nbd, xpram,
acorn floppy, swim_iop
o devfs handling for cdroms moved to register_disk()
o misc cleanups
o crapectomy and Lindent pf.c
o switch to add_disk()
o removal of bogus exports
o beginning of probe_disk() and gendisks for floppy
Andy Grover <[email protected]>:
o ACPI: change a non-critical debug message to a lower output level
o ACPI: Add include to provide PREFIX (Adrian Bunk)
o ACPI: Re-enable compilation of ACPI subordinate drivers as modules
(Bjoern A. Zeeb)
Dave Kleikamp <[email protected]>:
o JFS: Avoid parallel allocations within the same allocation group
o JFS: Slightly relax allocation group reservation
o JFS: swsusp support
o JFS: Put legacy OS/2 extended attributes in "os2." namespace
o JFS: Fix compiler errors in xattr.c
David S. Miller <[email protected]>:
o missing unlock_kernel
Erich Focht <[email protected]>:
o Remove global semaphore_lock for ia64, similar to i386 change for
2.5.25
Jean Tourrilhes <[email protected]>:
o Fix wavelan_cs net driver build
o update irda nsc-ircc driver
o More __FUNCTION__ cleanups for IrDA
Jeff Garzik <[email protected]>:
o Add new MII lib functions mii_check_link, mii_check_media
o Fix more IrDA __FUNCTION__ breakage. It now builds, yay
Jens Axboe <[email protected]>:
o IDE fixes
Linus Torvalds <[email protected]>:
o Don't try to attach a driver to a pci device that already has one
o Don't do a 64-bit divide when a simple shift will do
o Avoid confusion "mount" and "fsck" - don't show things like
floppies and CD's in /proc/partitions.
o Fix vm86 system call interface to entry.S. This has been broken
since the thread_info support went in (early July), and can cause
lockups at X startup etc.
Patrick Mochel <[email protected]>:
o Adding driver model support in IDE
Petr Vandrovec <[email protected]>:
o Fix NCP_IOC_SETOBJECTNAME ioctl in ncpfs
o Fix bigendian problems in ncpfs
o Add support for text mount option string to ncpfs
o ncpfs: Proper handling of watchdog packets
o ncpfs: Verify packet signatures on replies
o ncpfs: Pass unknown packets from server to userspace daemon. Now we
can deliver server messages to logged-in users even with UDP or TCP
transport.
Robert Love <[email protected]>:
o schedule() in_atomic() check
Steven Cole <[email protected]>:
o Link eepro100 net driver with mii module, fixing static build
St?phane Eranian <[email protected]>:
o ia64: perfmon update
o perfmon cleanup patch
o Fix bug in pfm_write_pmds()

Here's diff for this.
No sooner than had I made this diff than I read your mail...
But just replacing devfs_handle with cdroms causes weird
cdroms/cdroms/cdrom0 symlink.
Please review.

Hey, exact quote was "don't anybody else try to send patches as vi scripts",
so... ;-) Seriously, in that case context diff is an overkill.

Below are the trivial fixes for some typos introduced by these changes:
- missing comma in cdu31a
- missing semicolon in cdu31a
- comma instead of colon in gscd
- semicolon instead of comma in mcd
- missing closing bracket in sonycd535

Thanks. Other fixes: typos in partitions/check.c, block/floppy.c and
acorn/block/fd1772.c + replacement of #define with inline in block/floppy.c
(fd_eject()).

See previous posts, it fails on all archs. Linus already merged fixes, IIRC.

Hi,
sorry for the first post as Alexander Viro already posted a fix. Now, this
is a real Alpha problem, it seems (it has been there in 2.5.37, as well):
build fails on Alpha:
gcc -Wp,-MD,./.time.o.d -D__KERNEL__ -I/home/src/linux-2.5.38/include
-Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer
-fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -pipe -mno-fp-regs -ffixed-8 -mcpu=ev5
-Wa,-mev6 -nostdinc -iwithprefix include -DKBUILD_BASENAME=time -c -o
time.o time.c
time.c: In function `timer_interrupt':
time.c:132: structure has no member named `tv_usec'
time.c:132: `tick' undeclared (first use in this function)
time.c:132: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
time.c:132: for each function it appears in.)
time.c:133: structure has no member named `tv_usec'
time.c: In function `time_init':
time.c:368: structure has no member named `tv_usec'
time.c: In function `do_gettimeofday':
time.c:417: structure has no member named `tv_usec'
time.c:410: warning: `usec' might be used uninitialized in this function
time.c: In function `do_settimeofday':
time.c:488: structure has no member named `tv_usec'

The boot time lock up, that I have indeed encountered intermittently ever
since switching to 2.5.3{01}, may indeed be gone, but the one where just
moving my mouse around locks things up in a matter of seconds hasn't.
This started somewhere in 2.5.3{234}, only the latter of which I was able
to compile for my box.
Someone recently reported having similar problems and fixing them by
disabling MTRR, but this cannot be the entire story since I never had it
enabled in the first place. No wonder, on a dual P5 machine...
By the way, 2.3.38 gives me this:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.5.38/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_owner.o
depmod: find_task_by_pid

Patch below fixes the problem. Linus, please apply. Here's hoping Mozilla
doesn't blow up the patch; please let me know if it does and I'll try to create
a bk patch for this.

That may just be due to the new mouse driver and/or input layer, which
went in some weeks ago. What kind of mouse (and if it is a PS/2 mouse, can
you get a loaner USB mouse to test with, for example?)

There was a separate MTRR atomicity problem that would cause extreme
slowdowns on SMP with MTRR enabled when X was started, because the MTRR
code would have re-entrancy problems and potentially leave the caches
disabled. That should have been fixed in 2.5.36.

It does (or something else does) - tabs have been space'ified.
What the hell is _wrong_ with mail client authors that they can't get
something as simple as keeping a file intact _correct_? Why do email
clients think they have to corrupt the input on something as simple as
plain 7-bit ascii (oe even 8-bit latin1, for that matter)? Silly buggers.
Please complain to the mozilla people.

I've been sending patches via Netscape Mail and Mozilla Mail for
years... inline has never ever worked, but attachments always work[1].
And if the attachments are detected to be text by the internal magic,
the attachments are properly marked text/plain and sent cleartext...
So, attach patches and make sure the patches don't have binary crud in
them, and you're fine.

Thanks a lot !
I've merged your patch with other __FUNCTION__ stuff I already
had, split into manageable chunks and sent the result to Jeff Garzik
for inclusion. I'll follow up until it gets into the kernel...

Yep, I've suspected this to be input related from the start. That would
fit the timing perfectly.
It's a plain old serial mouse, no PS/2. It works fine with gpm, only
X locks up. Or to be entirely accurate: X consistently locks up almost
immediately, whereas gpm survived all testing until now.

Ah, ok. That's fairly unusual these days, and probably hasn't gotten that
much testing.
Anyway, I'd really like to pinpoint that by having you try another mouse
(borrow a PS/2 or USB mouse from somebody), to make sure that it really is
mouse-related.. After that I can try to beat up on Vojtech.

Below is a patch which exports the function, which used to be an inline.
(This is also an issue for ip6t_owner).

I'd like to test other mice too, but I have nowhere to connect them to.
This box is 6 years old by now (and yet still going strong :-), so it
doesn't have all those post-modern connectors...
For completeness: very occasionally, X does survive an hour or so of
normal use. So much so that last night I even thought to have found a
solution by changing a mouse-related bit in my kernel config. But today
it locked up again, causing me to loose a whole bunch of mails in the
process. So I'm back to 2.5.31 once more.
I'm gonna try a non-smp 2.5.38 next, to see if that makes any difference.

Have you tried running without X and using the serial port for other
things, like ppp? The assumption is that this is a mouse issue, and I
haven't run 2.5.38 long enough to swear that it isn't, but it might also
be a serial issue. I would venture a guess that the major developers don't
use serial much for anything.

Or booting with "noapic" if you don't already. Consider that a data point,
not a solution, I wish I wasn't running all my systems that way. Clearly
the performance impact of noapic is minimal, it just bugs me that after
all the work to balance the irq load many systems are not stable using
that feature.

It could be serial, especially as my big change went in back in .28.
It would also be worth checking that the port is actually detected
by the kernel; the kernel messages will give that information.
