Subject: How does ide-scsi get loaded?

I am running a standard debian 2.4.19-k7 kernel on a configuration that has an
ide dvd rom drive and a scsi cd writer.

Sometime during boot sequence (I can't find where in any log or dmesg - but
looking at the text flying by - soon after the scsi adapter is found and the
bus is being scanned for scsi devices) the module ide-scsi gets loaded.

The problem is, I don't want it loaded because it prevents mplayer playing my
dvds

I initially assumed it was something in the debian start up that caused it but

a) asking on the debian-user mailing list has not elicited any useful reponse
b) grep -r ide-scsi /etc throws up nothing (ie there is not reference to
ide-scsi in modules or modules.conf or any initialisation sequence doing a
modprobe ide-scsi)
c) scanning all through the initrd.img (loaded through the loop device) does
not show any reference to ide-scsi either (although grep finds the sequence
in bin/mount and then hangs locking my keyboard)
d) modules.dep only shows ide-scsi needing other modules (ide-mod, scsi-mod)
not the other way round.

I am stuck, where can I look next?

well the standard places are
- /etc/modules
- initrd
or
/etc/modules.conf
if it is in modules something like alias char-major-blah ide-scsi, then
change ide-scsi to 'off'

Else it may be compiled into the kernel, try passing ide-scsi=none or
something similar to the kernel (check the docs)

No - its not in there - as I said grep -r of /etc did not show anything

I do not think its in the kernel - lsmod shows ide-scsi as a loaded module.

If you are using lilo to boot look for a block like the following:

image = /boot/vmlinuz
label = linux
root = /dev/hda7
append = "enableapic hdd=ide-scsi"

Remove the "hdX=ide-scsi" and you are done. In case you are using grub
it should be a
similar layout.

Why not wrap /sbin/modprobe in a script that logs the module name to
the console?

Can you send your .config file for the kernel you are running, the dmesg
output at boot, and your bootloader configuration file (either
/etc/lilo.conf, or /boot/grub/grub.conf, commonly) for examination? Maybe
something will become apparent when the output is examined.

try appending 'hdd=ide-cd' then ide-scsi won't be enabled for that device.

[See below, but it looks to me as though debian is running /sbin/discover at
about the point in boot sequence where the module gets loaded (this is also
confirmed by the log I created by wrapping modprobe with a shell script to
write its parameters out :-.

The crux lines seem to be (there is no reference to ide-scsi in the log per
seem, but this is my IDE device). Judging by its position in the log it
could well be /sbin/discover being used to load the module.

man insmod, see /var/log/ksymoops. insmod/modprobe not only record the
symbols, they also append to the daily log.
