Hello,
I am getting reproducible kernel oops and random segmentation
faults whenever the kernel starts using VM. Without any VM pages
being used, the system is stable.
I have tested kernels compiled with and without HIMEM support
(all other kernel config options identical). Without HIMEM 4GB
support, the system is stable for weeks. With HIMEM 4GB support,
the system starts oops'ing and seg. faulting when VM starts
being used.
My system info:
1.5GB physical RAM (MemTest86 run for 2 times, no errors)
2.0GB VM on a partition
Aopen AX34u with Via Apollo Pro 133T chipset
Sample Oops from logs:

Because of the symptoms, I think that there could be some
incompatibility between Himem and the VM subsystem. Of course
I may have just configured my kernel incorrectly.
Any help is appreciated and I will gladly supply more logs
if I knew which ones would be useful.
Thanks,
Anthony Lau

You mean when your system starts to swap? Details?
(How much/how heavy it swaps before oops? vmstat output?)

Kernel version and .config?
Arrange klogd to be started with -x. Process oopses with ksymoops.
Then contact VM people (listed in no particular order):

Hmm, I'd call the "VM on a partition" something like "swap" myself.
This looks tiny, it's almost certainly not one of the "spin forever
hunting for a lowmem page intermixed with all the highmem pages" like
the big ones get burned by all the time on 2.4.x.

Looks like someone e.g. invalidate_inode_pages(), truncate_inode_pages(),
etc. etc., left pages hanging around. Borderline VM/vfs stuff. Or swap
code mangled something important. This oops either has buttloads of
stack noise or some other issue corrupting it. Can you find the first
oops? If this is not the first oops, then it's probably not useful.

No, it looks like VM/vfs interation-related stuff.

With very little swapping and <10MB of VM in use as reported by
the "free" command (Debian SID).
Next time I get an oops I will get the vmstat output.

I have tried vanilla 2.4.19+HTB2 patch and vanilla 2.4.20.
I have setup klogd with -x now and await the next oops.
Thanks for the list of VM people. They were not obviously listed
in the MAINTAINER file that came with the kernel sources.

It was getting a bit late in the evening for me. =)

That was the first Oops message logged. System instability starts before
any oop messages begin to show up in the standard syslogd logs. Something
does appear in ksymoops. I have setup "klogd -x" and await the next log.

Okay, what filesystem(s) are you using (this usually has something to do
with a filesystem)?
Also, are you applying any patches to 2.4.19/2.4.20?
Thanks,
Bill

The only filesystem I am using on the hardrive is ext3. The swap
partition was made as new style. I have tried reinitializing the swap,
and after rebooting, the symptoms reappeared.
> Also, are you applying any patches to 2.4.19/2.4.20?
2.4.19: I applied only the HTB2 patch for QoS.
2.4.20: no patches

Hello,
It took awhile for the next oops to appear. I modifed my boot
procedure by turning off swap with "swapoff -a" and allowed the
system to run. I waited until all of my 1.5GB of physical RAM was
allocated (cached or in use), and let the system to contiue to
run. The system ran stably for 2 days with normal use. I then
switch swap back on with "swapon -a".
I monitored VM usage with "vmstat" occasionally. VM paging was 0
in and 0 out up to about 2 hours before this latest oops.
Here is the oops log:
ksymoops 2.4.8 on i686 2.4.19. Options used

-k /proc/ksyms (default)
-l /proc/modules (default)
-o /lib/modules/2.4.19/ (default)
