Subject: i/o benchmarks on 2.5.70* kernels

Some benchmarks on 2.5.70* kernels. Hardware is quad P3 xeon
with 3.75 GB ram. For some workloads, -mm has higher numbers
than 2.5.70, for others, 2.5.70 is better. Overall, 2.5.70
seems to give more balanced results on these benchmarks.


AIM7 dbase seems to have an inverse relation to AIM7 fserver.
2.5.70-mm8 was highest at AIM7 dbase, and lowest at AIM7 fserver.
2.5.70-mm6 was the opposite. mm6 was highest for fserver, and
lowest for dbase.

Recent mm's have had some experimental fair request
allocation code in them which should be sorted now
(not yet in a released mm), and should improve
performance of "queue full" loads such as many
writers or readers.

It might not get the throughput of mainline kernels,
but I have seen 5x better max latency in some cases.
It would be interesting to see how it goes on a big
box.

Don't know whats going on with AIM7, but there have
been a few bugs in AS being fixed.

tiobench on SMP results are not very good, lots of
fragmentation, the random IO throughput drops is
probably due to AS strangling TCQ though. You are
using SMP and TCQ, right?

SMP yes. The non-benchmarked disks (which don't matter
say this at boot time:

scsi0:A:1:0: Tagged Queuing enabled. Depth 4
(aic7xxx)

These config options on the non-benchmarked disks:

On uniprocessor with IDE disk, benchmarks look very
different than SMP/SCSI. Recent -mm on uniprocessor
is frequently ahead of 2.5.70/2.5.71.

All numbers below are uniprocessor/ide.

AIM7 compute workload creates a memory shortage on
the machine (384 MB ram). About 2% difference between
the high and low numbers.

Yes, there's a hge difference between SMP and UP with ext3, and a
significant difference with ext2. This is because the block allocator is
borked: on SMP with multiple processes writing multiple files the blocks
get all interleaved. It's most notable in tiobench - it affects both read
and write bandwidth (read, because the file is already poorly laid out).

This became more serious with the Orlov allocator, and its tendency to put
files closer together on disk. But Orlov is a net win and no way can we
revert its changes just because the block allocator is stupid. The XFS
allcoator is smarter, and the effects are clear.

I'm still thinking about the block allocation problem. I don't like the
ext2 prealloc stuff and would prefer to not conceptually graft it into
ext3.

I don't think the tiobench scenario is a serious problem in real-life -
it's mainly a benchmarking problem.

But the block allocator problem also shows when multiple files are being
slowly grown, and we need to fix it for this real-world case.

2.5's dbench throughput took a bullet ages ago, when I merged the below
fairness patch.

I don't have any plans to un-merge it. The fact is, allowing one writer to
starve out all the others improves dbench throughput but worsens latency in
many other situations. dbench can get stuffed.




When a throttled writer is performing writeback, and it encounters an inode
which is already under writeback it is forced to wait on the inode. So that
process sleeps until whoever is writing it out finishes the writeout.

Which is OK - we want to throttle that process, and another process is
currently pumping data at the disk anyway.

But in one situations the delays are excessive. If one process is performing
a huge linear write, other processes end up waiting for a very long time
indeed. It appears that this is because the writing process just keeps on
hogging the CPU, returning to userspace, generating more dirty data, writing
it out, sleeping in get_request_wait, etc. All other throttled dirtiers get
starved.

So just remove the wait altogether if it is just a memory-cleansing writeout.
The calling process will then throttle in balance_dirty_pages()'s call to
blk_congestion_wait().

AS should be OK with SMP, but it would be nice to see
how it goes with a large number of spindles and processors.

AS should also be able to run SCSI alright, it tends to
perform quite poorly with TCQ and multiple random readers
though unfortunately. I'm setting up a box here with an
IDE and SCSI disk which I'll run my regression tests on,
(previously only IDE) so I might be able to help this along
a bit.

Fairness and interactiveness with AS and big TCQ should
be quite a bit better than deadline though, so it would
be a good workstation option even if it can't keep database
throughput up.

It looks like database loads without TCQ are often better
with AS than deadline, your AIM7 is, WimMark is. They can
be worse though. pgbench for example.

AS would have no impact on a single threaded IO load. aa is
using a lot of CPU for some reason. Driver difference
maybe? readahead? Andrea's secret sauce?

aa also gets much worse latency spikes at higher thread
counts (if tiobench is to be believed!). As thread count
rises readahead can't fit into the request queue, and you
see AS working.

On the write side, current mms should be improved due to
some changes in request allocation.
