For the most part, I've had good luck running 2.6.0-test2 on my notebook.
I took a working .config from a 2.6.0-test2 RPM and ran it through "make
oldconfig". This somehow caused me to loose all the CONFIG_VT* settings,
but this could have been because of my fumbling within "make menuconfig".
High memory bandwidth applications that would cause this notebook to
struggle to keep up under 2.4.20-18.9 ran as though I had more than twice
the CPU power. For example, I usually have 15 tabs open in mozilla, but
when I run ImageMagick's animate on a series of 20+ satellite images (not
fullscreen), it usally took 10-20 seconds to start loading the images with
interactivity recovering (read as: mouse keeping up) after it finished
loading all the images. Then, upon exiting, it would take about 10
seconds to redraw the screen without the closing window. Flipping the
workspace to mozilla, it would take another 10-20 seconds before mozilla
was reloaded.
Now, under 2.6.0-test2, animate starts loading images immediately and runs
them fluidly. I can even flip the workspace to mozilla, and that behaves
interactively.
Before, flipping between workspaces would cause music (under xmms) to
skip. It no longer does that.
But all is not perfect. I'll attach the problems I had as replies (so
each has it's own message thread).

I built 2.6.0-test2 for my Dell Inspiron 7000 notebook (PII, 300Mhz) with
a RH9 distribution. I build the kernel on another system (1.33GHz) using
ssh.
I was missing some device support, so did a "make menuconfig". The
configuration options were shown, I selected "Sound -->" and pressed
enter. The terminal went back to text mode and then hung. Gnome-terminal
started consuming all unused CPU cycles.
I could recover the process by closing the tab or resetting the terminal,
but this would only fix the problem for the moment. Frequently, it
wouldn't even finish redisplaying the screen before it locked again.
This would happen running "make menuconfig" locally or via ssh on another
system.
This is likely caused by some difference in the tty code in 2.6.0-test2.
The problem does not occur under 2.4.20-18.9. If 2.6.0-test2 is correct,
then I might need an updated version of gnome-terminal suitable for 2.6.0.

After spending the day visiting relatives, I came back to the notebook and
put something down nearby. I then went away for a moment and upon
returning discovered the screen unblanked but the mouse not functioning.
Flipping workspaces relieved my fear that 2.6.0-test2 had crashed, but
still no mouse.
So I decided to unplug and replug in the mouse (its USB after all).
This allowed the mouse to function again.

While xmms, launched under Gnome, doesn't skip, ogg123 launch via crond
does.
I have a subscription to an daily audio program that arrives monthly via
CD. I have a crontab entry which plays each day's program automatically.
Under 2.6.0-test2, there are lot's of skips when the short 2 minute
file is played.

Terminal emulation is vte, gnome-terminal is just the menubar and
prefs dialog. I moved the bug now (it probably would have been closed
already if Nalin had seen it, sorry about that).

Known issue. Is fixed in Linus's latest tree. If this still shows up
